Fresh Legal Trouble for Shah Rukh Khan over Smoking

Mumbai, May 23 (PTI): Already buffetted by controversies, Bollywood actor Shah rukh Khan on Tuesday found himself in fresh legal trouble as he got summons issued by a court in Rajasthan to appear before it on May 26 in a case related to smoking in public at a stadium in Jaipur during an IPL match.

Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, had been directed by a local court in Jaipur to appear before it on May 26 after he was seen smoking at the stadium.

Taking cognisance of a complaint filed by a cricket academy, the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Shilpa Sameer summoned the actor.

In his complaint, Anand Singh, who runs the Jaipur Cricket Academy, had sought action against Khan under section 5/11 of Rajasthan Prohibition of Smoking Act, 2000, which prohibits smoking at a public place.

"Two cops from Rajasthan police department came here today. A policeman from our police station accompanied the Rajasthan cop to the residence (Mannat) of the actor where the summons were given," an officer at Bandra police station.

The summons were handed over to his personal assistant as the actor was not at his residence, the officer said.

According to the petitioner, Khan was seen smoking at Swai Man Singh Stadium on April 8 during a match between Rajasthan Royals and KKR.

Singh filed the complaint on April 9 in which he claimed pictures of Khan puffing away were published in newspapers the next day.

Singh's counsel said there is a provision of cash penalty of Rs 200 for violation of the Act for the first time.

Khan was allegedly involved in a scuffle at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai recently, leading to imposition of a five-year ban on his entry into the venue.
