UAE: Twelve Enter Semi-finals of Gulf Voice of Mangalore - Season 3

Report and Pictures: Deepak Machado - Mangalore Konkans

Dubai, May 5: Friday May 4 was a day full of excitement and thrill among the Konkani speaking community of Dubai who thronged Dubai Gem Private School to participate in 'Konkani Gayan Spordho 2012'.

The bi-annual Konkani Singing Contest was successfully organised by Mangalore Konkans Dubai to motivate and nurture the budding singing talent among the community members. This event was also conducted to choose 6 best women and 6 best men for the semi-finals of Gulf Voice of Mangalore, which the organisers plan to hold on October 5 this year.

The sheer number of participants in each category proved the enormous singing talent among the Konkani community living here in the UAE.

The competition which was open to all Konkani speaking people, commenced with an invocation hymn at 10 am.

The competition was held in the following categories:

• Female Solo Konkani Singing - 18 years and above

The panel of judges which included Oswald D’Souza from Muscat, Claude D’Souza, Edith D’Souza, Benny D’Souza from Mangalore, did justice to their assignment of choosing the winning competitors. The unique feature of this event was the blend of singers from Mangalore and Goa.

While the participants performed their best and kept the audience spell bound till late evening, the judges who arrived from outside the UAE, commended the contestants for their enthusiasm and appreciated their quality of singing. They were marvelled at the wonderful arrangements and meticulous planning made by the organisers and stated that this is far beyond the standards in other places that they have witnessed. The leadership of James Mendonca, President of Mangalore Konkans Dubai and the team work of the members was particularly acknowledged.

The day’s event was an excellent platform to showcase the hidden singing talents among the young Konkani Speaking people, as the audience saw quite a few new faces on the stage with brilliant performance.

The audience who were there to cheer the participants from the morning, relished the sumptuous lunch hosted by the organisers.

The proceedings of the whole day were efficiently conducted by the two young comperes Roshan D’Silva and Rohith D’Souza, the young and energetic members of Mangalore Konkans Dubai.

Ivan Fernandes, Director of Regent Technologies was felicitated for sponsoring the event. Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld.com was felicitated for his support through the portal.

One of the best items was the group song yeya manglura. I guess this is a well trained group. this group stole the whole show with this very rhythmic number. The song and the guitar still rings in my mind. Hats off to the team. simply brilliant.

Dear President, Mangalore Konkan, one observation of the event. MC has announced that, reading the lyrics can lead to disqualify. In this case how the 2nd winner in the female above 18 cat won the prize and qualified to GVM semifinalist? The winner was boldly reading the lyrics. (Card size yellow piece of paper in the left hand) even then she had made several pronunciation mistakes. Please make rules one for all.

Congratulatons to all the participants & winners. Singing is an Excellent Talent. Hats Off to Mangalore Konkans for their sincere efforts in striving to bring out singing/other talents.

It requires lot of efforts & people work day & night behind the screen in organising such events. After every event, comments (Healthy/unhealthy) are common. You cannot satisfy 100% audience/people. Some are born to comment. It's always better to be positive & appreciate organisers/participants for their efforts/talents.

I wish all the semifinalists of Gulf Voice of Mangalore 'Good Luck' for this competition. Special Appreciation & Best Wishes for Prashanth Sequiera of 'Yo Moga' fame. 'All the Best' & our prayers & best wishes are always with you

Kudos to the winners and all the participants. Kudos to Mangalore Konkans for conducting a fantastic Konkani singing competition. It was well organized. Both comperes Roshan and Rohit were good and thanks for having antyakrashi, huminyo etc. Add some more such things so people will interact more and gain knowledge about Konkani. Over the years I could notice the Konkani pronunciation is improved specially among the teens which is a good sign. Kudos to Mangalore Konkans again.

Congrats to all winners. All the Best for the semifinalist.
I can see, number of people sent congratulatory message to the winners but ridiculous to see some of the sick minded people “disagree" for it. Those sick minded people on the earth, come to stage and face the audience and utter two words,if you have some guts. If you can’t encourage/ praise any one, don’t hurt them

Display of talents in singing enables us to encourage more and more people, young and old, to come forward with a "I too can do" attitude in the world of entertainment. Twentyfour years of combined efforts has certainly facilitated hundreds of people to shine in the UAE with a spirit of competition.

Daijiworld website has also contributed a great deal in publicising all these talented performances that has enabled thousands of talented faces to be made known to the world and identify themselves as to who they are and what they have to offer.

Competitions bring people together not only to display their God given abilities but also to witness their peformances on the stage for the joy of the public. The audience that has witnessed these competitions has benefitted the most year after year.

Its indeed amazing to realize how much we all can bring to the world our talents and abilities, far and beyond our borders, and make the world of different cultures appreciate how much we have to offer one another and make this world a better place to live and prosper.

Thanks to all those in the UAE who are giving their best to motivate all the Gulf voices to share their talents and make the community so vibrant with variety of events that make all of us far and near so proud and be privileged.

This was a wonderful opportunity for me to go on the stage and sing after few years. I have one suggestion show has to be named as Gulf voice of Mangalore cum Goa because so many Goan singers were there among Manglore Konkan compitition which does not make sense.
