Udupi: BBM Student Blanche DíSouza (20) Caught Copying in Exam Ends Life

Daijiworld Media Network Ė Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr 14: A second year BBM student of Madhava Pai Memorial College, Manipal, committed suicide after having been caught while copying in the examination. Out of guilt and shame she reportedly felt because of the said humiliating experience, Blanche DíSouza (20), committed suicide on Friday April 13.

The parents of the girl, Benedict DíSouza, and Jacinta DíSouza, are employed in Dubai. Blanche attended college by staying in rented accommodation at B B DíSouza Compund, Eshwar Nagar, Manipal, along with her elder sister, Brial DíSouza.

On Thursday, Blanche had been caught red-handed while copying in the examination. The principal had summoned Brial, and sent Blanche home with her. Out of insult caused by this incident, it is said, Blanche hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her room on Thursday night. Brial, after getting up on Friday morning, saw what had happened, and took steps to take her younger sister to hospital. But the doctors there declared that Blanche was brought dead.

Brial, who collapsed and became unconscious at this unexpected turn of events, had not regained consciousness till Friday night. Parents of the victim are expected to arrive here today. On a complaint filed by Alphonse Cutinho, maternal uncle of the victim, a case was registered at Manipal police station.

It was very shocking to hear that Blanch Dsouza is no more. She was an Altar Girl Server in St. Michael's Church, Sharjah, UAE before she went for higher studies to Mangalore. She was very active, helping nature, quiet and had a pleasing personality. When students are caught in exams they should be given counselling and at the same time diciplinary action should be taken. May God grant peace to her soul. We are deeply grieved at the loss of Blanch and offer our condolences to her family.

My humble sympathies to Blanch's family. Its easy to blame others when we are not in that situation. What about student's committing suicide when their parents are there 24/7.As a parent and teacher we should always advice our kids specially in this competitive world to do their best and its not the end of the world for their failure.

The comment of nagesh nayak, bangalore, is completely wrong. Because being a girl (Blanch, the authority of the Collage would have considered n handle the case with care n am sure the mistake is completely from the Collage management. Let Brayal, recover n the truth will come out.

One of the Great shock towards Blanch case, Can't believe n it is difficult to digest. Many comments regarding the suicide by Blanch, but totally I disagree on the issue. From my point of view, the great mistake of the Principal n the Exam hall supervisor. Both would have acted in a smart way being a Girl, there no difference between their own child n the others (Blanch) ! The real thing is that D'ling Blanch n Brayal, both are wonderful n very sweet Girls. Really their parents are lucky to have them, but the way Blanch is did is wrong and by mistake also can't imagine that she will do n I shocked my self to read the story or hear the news. She is So much dedicated towards to Church activities n good in sports also helpful girl. But the way the tragedy happened I can't believe, just praying to Almighty to give currage to her Sister Brayal n her parents Jessy Bai, Benna , to bear the lose. But I am sure that she (Blanch) will have eternal life n there is no mercy towards to the Principal n the supervisor, the way they handle the case, what-so-ever. In human being there is mercy towards to each other but why did Blanch did not get mercy in her coping case, it is not a criminal, the school authority would have made Blanch to appear for the same exam for the mistake. So humble girl she is n the way it's ends so sad, All of us in Dubai n Sharjah, shock to hear the sad news. May her soul rest in peace. A M E N

We knew Blanch as a smiling and loving child when she was here. She was involved in so many Church activities. All adults are a pillar of support to every child, no matter what the situation is! The world is often harsh to the little ones :(
Can't believe Blanch did it. Our Heavenly Father is so loving, lets cry to Him to have mercy on her innocent soul :(
Sincere condolences to the bereaved family. May you experience Jesus's true love at this difficult time, God Bless.

Mr. Nayak i understand you may think self righteous and donot have any human compassion. I know this family and Blanche. Fear and humiliation can drive you to do many things and also the fact that your parents are struggling in foreign lands and you fail to keep up with thier expectations. You are a retard and shouldnt be allowed to express your self. I hope her soul rests and in peace and brail and her family may have the courage to face this.

Also Mr. Nayak try to be a little more human if you cant help try not to do any thing.

It is very unfortunate that Blanche D'Souza at this tender age of 20 had to take this drastic step to end your life just because you were caught copying. I do not think she had to take this drastic step as her parents were in the gulf working hard for the well being of their children. Well after that I have no reason why she took such a drastic step to kill herself and also bring sadness to her parents, sister and the family members/friends. May her rest in peace and console her all the bereaved family.

Poor Girl...Eternal Rest Grant to Her Soul......
Because they want the Best for their children?
Those who have no Experience of What Most Indians have to undergo in the Gulf cannot Understand and put the Blame on the Parents
The Parents can also open Pharmacy shops or something like Grocery Stores, but then with the Rising COSTS IN OUR GREAT country, there is an alternative for both skilled and semi skilled workers in Gulf Nations. The need to provide something better for the that they can have a better life than them.....

I can understand what went through the mind of this child when caught red handed. One of my close friends faced the similar situation in St. Aloysius College in early 80's. He took the rope and climbed the coconut tree and about to be hanged himself. Luckily for him, his Aunt grew suspicious and followed him and persuaded him to climb down and now this friend is settled very well in life.

It is very easy to blame. But when you confront such situation, for some sensitive persons, it is next to impossible to show their face in the society. Society is very cruel indeed.

Please don't blame any one. It has just happened. It is her bad time. At any cost, please don't blame the parents whose status is not known to us. No parent will expect a suicide from their loving children.

It is sad and sympahy for the parents and the family. Just keep in mind that by blaming we will not hurt anyone. All the world is our brothers and sisters. let us share our grief and sadness. It is all God's will we face all sacrifices in our loved ones.

To the parents, keep faith to God and continue praying for her soul.

For the first time NN has written very sensible piece of comment. I fully hold the parents responsible as counselling starts from home and not from school. Just like we say Charity starts at home, we need to make parents understand that they have to bring every issue negative and positive impact to the knowledge of their kids. Today we are living in a world where information is at our finger tips (especially counselling information) and it was important for the parents to be there with their kids at the time of exams for good guidance, encouragement, moral support and so on which they have totally failed to do so. I am a parent and I ensure that one parent i.e., mother or father is there with our kids at the time of their exams to give them encouragement and moral support. During exams many issues comes into the picture - good health, timely healthy food, guidance, advice, little bit of entertainment will help them to have their mind fresh to answer the exams. Holding the school responsible is absolute not acceptable and I feel in all "The parents are responsible for the Child's negative action". What is important to understand whether the parents were aware of the childs exam copying and if so the school action and thereafter the parents action must have taken the toll on that poor child. School did its duty for copying but the parents failed to perform their duty properly. Were the parents aware of the childs copying action needs to be probed before she committed suicide and if they have shouted at her also then they should be held responsible for abetment to suicide. Thorough probe is required.

Judge not others, because you will be judged. Why increase the agony of those concerned? If you are so interested and concerned, pls pray for the soul of the dead or for the parents and sisters and the Principal, who must be really feeling terrible at this moment.

Though both the parents are working abroad to support the children, sometimes it is necessary that one of them take care of the children by staying together, instead of leaving them in the hands of the relatives. After all relatives cannot give the same attention and love what the parents could give. There could be various reasons to take this drastic step besides copying. May her soul rest in peace.

Nagesh nayak, bangalore you are right, that is what your parents have not taught you what is right and what is wrong and who is right person and who is wrong person....beside that i guess you call your parents HEY father and Hey mother?

Dear Joseph D'souza..Thank you.I received Plus & Minus marks from Daiji readers many times. My policy is that analyse the thing properly.Truth will come out.Simple example..Shankar Bidari case. Most of the readers called him Rapist like Muthulakshmi. But when I analysed the things properly, people started favoring Shankar Bidari.

In this suicide case also..I don't blame neither Principal nor Parents. I BLAME SYSTEM. At the same time I request all parents not to leave your children alone because of some Dhs or Dollors. I am happy that my wife who worked in prestigious school in Dubai resigned to her job 7 years back...and settled in India..FOR CHILDREN..It is a hard and painful decision but very good decision at the end.

It is very shocking news indeed. Present competitive world each and every parent desire good future of their children and they compell them to perform well in examination. See that all are not good in studies but they will perform in other areas. As a parent we have give all moral support atleast by their availability by staying with them during examination.

Nobody can justify copying, but by blaming parents at this juncture, you are adding salt to the injury. Be sensitive to parents feelings. If times are bad anything can happen to anyone. Tomorrow it could be me or you. So do not be too presumptuous, instead pray for the well being of all.

If committing suicide is the fruit of insult, humiliation, then why canít we look at our three great elected leaders who were recently in the news for some reasonís. Still they face media and attend public meetingsÖ!!! A short-cut to solve a problem will not bring long term solution.

If either of the parent was with the teenage girl, to provide moral and emotional support during this critical time, I think, this incident would not have happened. Generally parents employ maximum pressure on kids during their studies to get maximum marks to secure a bright future leaving the present in dark !

The rest of us need to look into the future, safety and security of our kids seriously. Often we must remind / encourage our kids to take positive steps with strong mind against emotional feelings. Let us all reassure ourselves that Ďwhatever will be the difficulties / problems in my/our life, I will fight and will not find ways to run away from the difficulties / problems.í

May the soul of Blanche DíSouza rest in eternal peace and her family get the Heavenly blessings to bear the great loss, Amen.

Some one is keen to blame parents for childs mistake. Then most of the readers including me have to think how the parents of So and so brought up them without any basic human abilities.Just blame and make fun of someone for no reasons .What ever goes up and down, just point out based on religion and hurt others emotions.
IF possible comfort someone. If you have nothing to do with it sit quietly holding a holy book and read and refresh your mind.May your kids will learn good from you.Vidye ullavana muka muthu biruvantikku, vidye yilladavana muka haalura haddinanthikku Sarvajna.

Dont blame the parents. This happens because of the stress, pressure. How many good lecturer the colleges possess'. They donno to teach properly and ultimate the students suffers. In some of the colleges if students asks doubts or fails to answer the questions, the lecturers simply cut off their attendance causing students to suffer owing to shortage of attendance. Principals of some colleges doesn't even know wht happens inside the class room. Only students have to bear all this.I request the management of colleges to build up good relationship between student and mgt.

What a shame a young life is lost.i feel principal could have dealt this kind of problems in abetter manner.he must have insulted and humiliated in front of every one least he could have warned privately.these things happens in most of the educational institutes as our school authorities are not trained to deal with. May her soul rest in peace.this incident has bought shame to the institute.

What a shocking and painful thing. What is happening to our young ones in Mangalore? Where is their resilience? What is our church doing and other religious institutions doing about this perennial and recurring problem? These young people need guidance and counselling. Also every institution of learning should have well trained counsellors to guide students in crises situations. Even in a country like Kenya every school and institution of learning has a counsellor who accompanies students and guides them. This is so shameful, frustrating and painful. Young ones ending lives for so silly a reason. The principal may have condemned or badly dealt with the girl. Police should check it out properly and establish the real cause. This is too much. May God rest the girl in eternal peace and confort and consolation to the bereaved family. I heart goes out to the parents and sister of the girl. God, give them strength and courage to bear the pain and loss. God bless one and all.

Please dont blame the parents without knowing the facts, there must be a reason for them to be there , the greed part is not the issue, here first the counselling is need for the principal out of seniority or other reasons they have been given the responsiblity, and they try to prove a point to see their presence felt, the principal should have taken proper step, who knows what he said, he should be questioned and held responsible for this, as mentioned by people who knew her that she was a good girl, and knowing her background the principal should have handled in a proper manner, where a innocent life could have been saved, the principal is equally responsible for this innocent girls death, there are various reasons why parents go and work Greed is not the issue, we should not jump into to conclusion not knowing the facts, as is the principal is concerned, knowing the man, who is a totally a incompetent person is why I say this? he was never a good lecturer and never a good principal all students without any bias opinion will agree to this, may the girl rest in peace, and may god give enough strength for the family to over come this loss may the elder sister come back to proper senses, please see that proper counsilling is given to her to lead a decent life.

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Very sad indeed.
Guess she must have been provoked to resort to copying tactics due to various pressures (academic, household or allied) which must have been difficult to cope with for a girl of her age. Additionally, the apparent scolding she may have received from her principal could be another reason to have pushed herself to the limit.

All the more surprising is the fact that her parents are working overseas ... can understand it can be for the betterment of the family .. but children in their teens need love and affection from their parents at this age and certainly not recommended to leave them at the care of their near and dear relatives ... no matter what. ..

One wonders how her maternal uncle may have been taking care of both the girls..nothing can be said at this point. All angles will surely be probed and everything will come out after a detailed enquiry. May her soul rest in peace.
