It was a rare occasion when journalists, reporters and photojournalists from across the city had some respite from their busy schedules and celebrated their special day.

Press Club Day, jointly organized by Mangalore Press Club, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union (DKWJU) and Patrika Bhavana Trust was celebrated at Urwa Church Hall, Lady Hill here on Sunday March 11.

Dr Harish Kumar, commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, addressing the gathering of mediapersons and their families, said that media educates people and mediapersons have to be active round-the-clock.

"The recent tussle between lawyers and mediapersons was unfortunate," he said, "Both are inseparable pillars of the democracy, therefore, such incident should not take place in future." He also called upon the mediapersons to be fair and and transparent in the way they present news, as it has a direct impact on society.
 
M N Rajendra Kumar, president, SCDCC bank distributed the awards to mediapersons who had excelled in the field. Among those honoured was Daijiworld's ace photojournalist Dayanand Kukkaje, Ravi Posavanike of Times of India, Satish Ira of Udayavani, V U George of Mangalore Today and Sudhakar Yermal of Vijaya Karnataka.

P B Harish Rai, president, DKDWJU presided. K Anand Shetty, president, Mangalore press club, B Ravindra Shetty, president, Patrikabhavana Trust, Ramakrishna R, chief secretary, Shreenivas Nayak Indaje, chief secretary among others were present. Cultural programmes followed.


On the occasion, prizes were also distributed to winners of sports events that had been held recently:

Men 100 meters race: Ajiz, Vartha Bharathi, 1st prize, Somshekar, Namma TV, 2nd prize.
200 meter race: Somshekar, Namma TV, 1st prize, Rohith, Hosadigantha, 2nd prize
400 meters race: Somshekar, Namma TV, 1st prize, Rohith, Hosadigantha, 2nd prize
 
Gunny bag race: Mohammed Zaheer, Vartha Bharathi, 1st prize, Suhain Sahaya TV, 2nd prize

Musical chair: Jagannatha Shetty Bala, Jayakirana, 1st prize, Wilfred D’Souza, TV9, 2nd prize
 
Banana eating competition: Naveen Shetty, Namma TV, 1st prize, Sudhakar Padil, Puttur Press Club, 2nd prize
 
Coin picking: Somshekar, Namma TV, 1st prize, Harishchandra, Namma TV, 2nd prize
 
Slow Bike Race: Sharan, Sahaya TV, Lokesh Bannur, Puttur Press Club, 1st prize and Agnel Rodrigues, Coastal Times, 2nd prize
 
Musical chair (above 40 years) Dr Shivasharan Shetty, Namma TV, 1st prize, Sudhakar Padil, 2nd prize
 
In team events Namma TV team won 1st prize in tug-of-war and Sahaya TV team won 2nd prize.
 
Lagori: Anil Jogi team 1st prize, Puttur Press Club 2nd prize

Cricket: Dayanand Kukkaje team 1st prize and Jayakirana team won 2nd prize.

It is surprising to see that in the group photo of more than 30people, there was only one woman. That means this press club is fully male dominated.Can anybody explain the reason.
