Panaji: All Four Members of Alemao Family Lose

Panaji, Mar 6 (IANS): All four members of the Alemao family, who controversially got to contest as Congress-Nationalist Congress Party candidates, Tuesday lost the Goa assembly elections.

Brothers Churchill and Joaquim Alemao, who were cabinet ministers, were defeated in Navelim and Cuncolim respectively -- to Avertano Furtado (independent) and Rajan Naik (BJP).

Churchill Alemao's daughter Valanka lost in Benaulim to Caitu Fernandes of Goa Vikas Party (GVP).

Joaquim Alemao's son Yuri lost in Sanguem to Bharatiya Janata Party's Subhash Phaldesai.

The candidature of the Alemao family had caused outrage in the party ranks as well as civil society groups.

Churchill Alemao, a former chief minister, has been booked for smuggling and has been detained under the National Security Act.
