Soon, 'Mangaluru' to be Official Name of Mangalore

Narayana Swamy
Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, Feb 26 : Six years after the then chief minister of Karnataka Dharam Singh's proposal of changing the names of 12 major cities into pure Kannada forms, the time is nearing to change them officially.

Though some of the cities have already implemented the cities' names in Kannada, there was no compulsion from the government to follow the rule. According to reliable sources, the legal hurdles to go ahead with the proposal is almost cleared now and within a month 12 major cities of Karnataka will be renamed according to their Kannada roots.

This means, Bangalore will be renamed as 'Bengaluru', and Mangalore as 'Mangaluru'.

The Karnataka government is finalising the process, and the official gazette is awaited.

S V Ranganath, chief secretary of Karnataka government said that legal hurdles related to renaming 12 cities have been cleared, and only the opinion from Surveyor of India is awaited. The committee headed by S V Ranganath has submitted the report to Surveyor of India in order to make necessary changes in the map and survey documents.

It may be recalled that when the proposal was made in 2005 there had been opposition from a few corners, specially to changing the name of 'Bengaluru' and 'Belagavi'.  Public Interest Litigations were filed in the high court to put a stay on announcing the change of names. But both applications were rejected by the high court in 2008. Later, even the central government approved the change of names, but the implementation was not possible due to technical reasons.

The old and new names of twelve cities are as follows:

Bangalore - Bengaluru
Mangalore - Mangaluru
Bellary - Ballary
Bijapur - Vijapura
Belgaum - Belagavi
Chikmaglur - Chikmagaluru
Gulbarga - Kalburgi
Mysore - Mysoru
Hospet - Hospete
Shimoga - Shivamogga
Hubli - Hubballi
Tumkur - Tumakuru

Forget changing names of our CITIES. First change the name of our STATE.
We are ashamed to say we are from KARNATAKA. It is all because of our CHOR POLITICIANS.

We Mangaloreans refer to Mangalore as 'Kudla' in daily useage by and large. However Keralites pronounce it as 'Mangalapuram'only.Even the train bogies bound to Mangalore carry sign board as 'Mangalapuram'only.I very much doubt that these boards will be changed as 'Mangaluru' when the name is chanaged as such. The decision of the government reminds me the Tulu proverb" Bele daanthina achaari baaleda pinkaan kettiyege"!!!
Government may consider the change of name as"Kudla" instead of Mangaluru which is a true tribute to Tulunadu.

when they will repair the roads and provide 24 hrs electricity/water, improvement health sector etc. Just changing the cities name by words what will make difference ! Is there any growth of the city or improvement in Governing system or society will improve. Our leaders lacks vision and intellegence. Transform cities with better infrastructure.

This government is busy in changing the names of the city rather changing the lives of the People. There is much it can do for upliftment of the people than wasting the time on this.

...it took 6years just to change the names of cities THEN imagine how many more years/centuries required to make the city or improve the poverty stricken public.... What a great acheivement by all then and now Karnataka governments!!!! No award in whole world would be enough to honour our leaders and system. Anyway with the new names let us hope the cities will have new light n better life.

After changing also people will say as previous only.the official changing will get some works to printing press to change the documents and some works to painters and some good business to paint shop. one more orguments why we cant change it as "KUDLA " mangalore is known as Tulunadu Tuluvara Nadu.some people can also say their demand or interest as kodiyala maikaala etc.

Kannada schools are going to close.there is no facilities in kannada school.there is no teachers as well as no students for kannada school. government itself thought and coments about closing the kannada schools in karnataka.there is lack of kannada talking people in Bangalore.,which is the capital city of karnatka. may be tamil telugu hindi and english talking people are more then that. Regarding the language Bangalore is known as ENNADA EKKADAGALA NADUVE SWALPA KANNADA.Even the politician childrens (their sons,daughters,grandsons,grand-daughter,etc and all their relatives are studying in english medium school only.,if survying about this, may be there is no kannada medium student of of any politicians.for them, thease language emotions are only for their political benefit.after all there are many politician they can't speak fluent and proper kannada.sometime even our chief minister is speaking english (n tulu) mixed kannada.then what they are going to gain by changing the names of the cities. what they say that in pure kannada.which they are not able to speak..,kannada is a rich language there are the origin kannada words for most of all the things., did they aware? which the kannada words are availbale there still they omit english words for that, while they are speaking kannada. If they have sincere love and respect with our Great Kannada Language.then give all the facilities to goverment kannada schools.should give priority to the kannada medium, students while recruiting for the government jobs. restrict some of the government jobs only for the kannada medium students. First of all better to arrange a kannada class to all the elected represents to speak fluent in kannada.then we can think about changing this names of the cities.

Yedyrappa changed his name become CM n went to Jail. Change the name of Dharam Singh too. Foolish politicians nothing else to do. Bombay is internationally known and Bombay n not Mumbai. On any way it won't help the public. New generation won't accept these new names with old accent. One more development work from BJP.

When our governments can't do any development work, they change the names! utter non-sense.. I think the status-quo on the names should be maintained! Wasting tax payers money in changing the names is ridiculous indeed when thousands of people find it difficult to earn livelihood.. Sensible people should protest and hope that sense prevails on the government to maintain status quo!

Very nice step taken. Hope this time it will materialize..

Penalize the people who do not follow the Govt Rule, cancel the licenses of the firms which does not respect the Govt order.

Bangalore Mirror should become Bengaluru Mirror. Bangalore/Mangalore times should become Bengaluru/Mangaluru times..

Also make learning Kannada compulsory for outside people. They are earning their bread and butter here, they should respect our language also..
