Soon, 'Mangaluru' to be Official Name of Mangalore

Narayana Swamy
Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, Feb 26 : Six years after the then chief minister of Karnataka Dharam Singh's proposal of changing the names of 12 major cities into pure Kannada forms, the time is nearing to change them officially.

Though some of the cities have already implemented the cities' names in Kannada, there was no compulsion from the government to follow the rule. According to reliable sources, the legal hurdles to go ahead with the proposal is almost cleared now and within a month 12 major cities of Karnataka will be renamed according to their Kannada roots.

This means, Bangalore will be renamed as 'Bengaluru', and Mangalore as 'Mangaluru'.

The Karnataka government is finalising the process, and the official gazette is awaited.

S V Ranganath, chief secretary of Karnataka government said that legal hurdles related to renaming 12 cities have been cleared, and only the opinion from Surveyor of India is awaited. The committee headed by S V Ranganath has submitted the report to Surveyor of India in order to make necessary changes in the map and survey documents.

It may be recalled that when the proposal was made in 2005 there had been opposition from a few corners, specially to changing the name of 'Bengaluru' and 'Belagavi'.  Public Interest Litigations were filed in the high court to put a stay on announcing the change of names. But both applications were rejected by the high court in 2008. Later, even the central government approved the change of names, but the implementation was not possible due to technical reasons.

The old and new names of twelve cities are as follows:

Bangalore - Bengaluru
Mangalore - Mangaluru
Bellary - Ballary
Bijapur - Vijapura
Belgaum - Belagavi
Chikmaglur - Chikmagaluru
Gulbarga - Kalburgi
Mysore - Mysoru
Hospet - Hospete
Shimoga - Shivamogga
Hubli - Hubballi
Tumkur - Tumakuru

Tulus will form Tulu Rakshana Vedike, Kannadigas will form Kannada Rakshana Vedike, Konkanis will form Konkani Rakshana Vedikes!!! and know what, Fight in the name of languages and ethinicity, this is the only thing these people can do! And then at last for decoration purpose will blab "First be Indians, Last be Indians" etc etc... Re, first sort out all these language based ills in your own state/city and then advice others to be Indian. Either accept Kannada or disintegrate as separate states. Thats it!

Arun, Kasaragod

Are you sure about that?? Almost all the trains originating from Mangalore Central depart towards Kerala. And that means we Malayalis use the station more and contribute more! Might be Mangalore Junction will have a different story altogether!

Its the right time we had Tulu(nadu) Rakshana Vedike. These malluuuuuuus are turning our Kudla into a malayalipuram. Does any politician of any party care for Mangaloreans? Go to railways and you need to speak only in malayalam in order to get a response from the malluuus sitting there.

Hello Arun Kasargod, if Mangalore is Managalpuram for you then dont call Bangalore as Bengalapuram. For your kind info. Manglore Railways bookings reserved for Mallus by own mull officers for rest only Tatkalik Ticket and making money. Contributions towards Konkan Railyway majority Shares by Karnatak. Kerala only 2% now grabbing our facility. Dont talk n comment rubbish. Learn and Proudly say WE ARE INDIANS first.

Shame on you guys who boast about our state and useless leaders. Look at the comments of Arun Kasargod, boldly and with guts openely pointing out about achievemnts and inteligence of whole of Karnataka State. No way anybody can stop them reaching any corner of India and togetherwith greater hights

Arun, Kasaragod
Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Oh come on! Have you seen any Kerala cities? Leave Kasaragod, come south and see Kannur. Its a municipality but still is as large as Mangalore. Surely, Mangalore is not the best city in whole India! How can you be so proud when you yourself do not have any linguistic - cultural identity? You say Tulu, but it is not even officially recognized. You people do not have your own state, your language is under Kannada's foot and alas, your culture itself is under threat.First learn to respect other cultures, OK! Yes, we do venture out of our state for jobs, get jobs, make money and succeed.

You people cannot find job in your own state, cannot find job outside, jobless enter politics and do all these useless gimmicks! FYI, the contribution of Malayalis to the city, mainly its economy is undeniable. 90% of the rail bookings in Mangalore Central are done by Malayalis thus making it one of the most profitable stations in India. Even the name of the city is derived from Mangaladevi, who herself was a princess from Kerala. It will be always Mangalapuram for us even if change it to Mangaluru/Kudla/Kodial whatever!

Wow!! amazed at the prioritization of govt duties & responsibilities..

RENAMING CITIES?? How does that bring improvement to the everyday lives of people??

Providing basic food, shelter, sanitation & education for the needy & has sadly taken a backstand..but renaming a city has become priority..
Focus on bettering humanity needs & fulfill the requirements of the position. That will earn you respect..not changing names!!
Why don't we all change our names to kannada/tulu speaking names...sounds like a plan!! What say?

Believe it or not ! BOMBAY's name was changed more than 15 years back to the silly maniac name MUMBAI. The name BOMBAY has so much charm, charisma and makes one feel so proud. And the word MUMBAI sounds so obnoxious, degrading. Guess what, I regularly write letters to my residence in BOMBAY with the Pin Code No on it. I was once told by one of my Shiv Sena friend that Bal Thackeray had instructed the postal authorities not to deliver any letters with the word BOMBAY written on it. Yet the postman adopts a care-a-damn attitude. He knows who is sane and insane. He still delivers the letters promptly. After all, WHAT'S IN A NAME ! ! ! ! ! Is Bal Thackeray / Shiv Sena listening?

"A rose is a rose, what's in a name" is what the great English playwright, William Shakespeare once said. Whether Mangaluru or Mumbai, they will always remain Mangalore and Bombay respectively. Mangaluru is not a new name, it is only the Kannada version of Mangalore. The Kannada speaking population has been referring to Mangalore as Mangaluru, Tulu speakers call it Kudla and Kodial in Konkani. To English speakers it is Mangalore.

Just as India is referred to as Bharat in Hindi,Bombay as Mumbai in Marathi, Japan as Nippon in Japanese, Spain as Espana in Spanish and so on. But the English versions remain the same. Mangalore to Mangaluru is in fact is not a change of name. Therefore, the government should ensure that no expenses are involved in this regard.

Who are they U. R. Ananthamurthy & Dharam Singh??? who have given them the rights to do so!!! we live in this city, let the people from MANGALORE decide what the name should be!!! If they got a love for their language like Kannada, tulu, konkani or english.. keep it at home. Do not bring it into the public, forcibly implement city's name to be this or that.
Bring change in System, Infrastructure development, Education etc... people will definitely appreciate the initiative, rather then changing names!

If the govt wants to change the name and if its so keen in implementing the regional name or the name based on language let them rename MANGALORE as KUDLA..Our land from ages is TULU NADU i.e a TULU speaking region so why to enforce name in kannada...And speaking about original roots mangalore was always noted as either kudla or mangalore itself but only when you read it in kannada books its called mangaluru or whtevr..Most of the people here so call'd kannada supporters who in real cant even speak kannada properly say it is modern or colonial name then PLEASE check our national capital's name its NEW DELHI why new its english right...??? Namma tulunadu dha veera janakle jus rethink wht to support and what not..jus a name change into kannada doesnt make any sense guys we are the most modern n intelligent part in karnataka so dont be dumb n support all stupid acts of d Govt try to maintain our TULUVA standard...and by the way MANGALORE has always a charm n the way its been pronounced..its awesome..

Instead of cosmetic changes...the state govt should give priority to locals/statizens in Govt.jobs as well as private cos. as done in other metros/states.In Blr Kannadigas are a minority in software cos and in Govt orgs like ISRO, HAL, etc. the other state ppl have their godmen sitting in HR and related depts and only allowing their people. This place was originally Kodiyala and our ancestors were calling in the same name particularly in villages nearby, even though Mangalore was in official records. In Kannada it was Kodiayala, same pronounciation in Konkani also, but in Tulu was 'Kudla' , Tulu version of Kodiala. Slang English pronounciation Mangalore was of the actual pronounciation of 'Mangala Ooru' named after Goddes Mangaladevi. Before the place was with only small population with all mudroads only (even Hampankatta was of mudroad], there was a Water tank in that area for the benefit of Bullocks drawing the carts from hinterland actually built by a phylonthropist Appanna. In slang English language it was called 'Hampankatta' when people of the region were calling it as Appannana Katte.I remember in my boyhood our elders were telling only 'Kodiala' even though for last over 200 years Mangala uru was named to the place.

Some people here says it will be difficult for others to accept new name. In my previous company one client came from US and he addressed us saying "Good Morning Bengaluru". Even his PPT presentation contained the same name.

People of the world will accept the new name. Only people of other states do not accept the new names.

Due to various reasons, we can’t change the scenario of Mangalore at least we can change the name now. But just a spelling and pronunciation change only, else unlike previous Governments still sounds better than Indira or Rajiv Nagar, Aurangabad, etc etc

Actually Mangalore should be renamed as "Kudla", Moodabidri as as "Bedra", Karkala as "Karla" and D V Sadananda Gowda as "Halli Gowda"

Hope they don't rename Karnataka Vidhana Sabha as "House of Corrupt Politicians". Useless politicians. Dharam Singh was the worst CM of Karnataka. Good for nothing.

Makes sense. If a person has a right to change his or her personal names, why should anyone object to a State or a country doing the same and go back to the original roots? Those who do, still cling on to the old British ideas.
