Now, Cruise from Mangalore to Lakshadweep

Now, Cruise from Mangalore to Lakshadweep

Mangalore, Sep 28 (DHNS) : Come October 14, Mangaloreans can sail down to the Lakshadweep islands from their own shores rather than going as far as Kochi.

The Lakshadweep Development Corporation will operate its shipping services, fulfilling what had been a long cherished dream of many in the city.

With the vessel setting sail, people travelling from here to Lakshadweep can enjoy the dream-like vista provided by tropical islands—clear waters, coral reefs and marine species—as they cruise through some of the thickest forest covers of the country they had only seen in pictures.

Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a programme here, Lakshadweep tourism co-ordinator in Mangalore Rasheed Bolar said he had approached the district administration in April through Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd with a proposal to start a vessel service between Lakshadweep and Mangalore old port.

The Deputy Commissioner had in turn forwarded the proposal to the state and Central governments and received a positive response that resulted in preparations for the first voyage in little more than two weeks.

The first vessel will take tourists to Agatti and Kavaratti and will return on October 16. Rasheed said the tariff for the voyage will be known next week.

Reef route

Since the only coral reef route is on the Western side, Rasheed said tourists would prefer the route from Mangalore, providing a big boost to the city’s tourism industry. The policies of the Kerala government may have helped increase traffic to the islands from Kochi, but many would prefer Mangalore as the launching port for the scenic view.  The new route will also make half-a-dozen islands accessible for those travelling from here, as  Kiltan—the nearest island from Mangalore—is a mere 252 km away and another islet, Minicoy, is 537 km.

The service also reduces the time taken to visit Lakshadweep to just 12 hours. Rasheed said permit to visit the islands can be obtained from Mangalore itself.

The Lakshadweep Development Corporation would operate 21 trips between Mangalore and the islands from October to May, when the service will break for the monsoon season.

Very good news to all Mangaloreans, sure it will boost tourism and other activity.

Now regarding safety......There is a minimum safety for all vessels which sails in international waters, if these were not followed they won't get license to sail, which includes life jackets, life rafts, GPS, SSB radios, radar, Satellite phones etc etc.....

All the bet and let the tariffs be reachable to the common man.

When so much is said about the Mediterranean and Carabian cruses, it is good to see that these kind of ocean cruises have come to our doorsteps.

Congrats to all concerned for the trouble taken to put up this idea to The Government and for ensuring that the proposal is accepted.

I am sure the project will be a roaring success.

Will the organizers please explain in detail the time and date schedules and let people know whether the ship will disembark people at certain islands for sightseeing. What about the older people? Can they stay on board instead of walking round the islands?

THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE. ONCE AGAIN KUDOS TO THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE IDEA.

    It is a great news.

    Somebody needs to give specific

    Mr. Harold Cunha, about the
    safety stardard of this ship.

Even though the journey is a short
one, it is in a wide and rough
    ocean, so the safety standards
    must be addressed at first.

Finally, the authority realised the strategic importance of Mangalore as transit point for the tourists from abroad as well as from Goa and Kerala. Our tourist authority should make a project to develop a barren island closer to Mangalore that again can become the transit point for Mangalorean tourists to venture other islands. There should be multi-facility 3 & 4 Star hotels around NMPT to accommodate the transit tourists from Goa and Kerala.

Just 100kms straight on the open sea there are spots of importance for future floating islands that have potential like Dubai’s PALM ISLAND. We may call our man made island as COCO-NUT ISLAND. The rich and famous Indians can own a piece of property in that island.

Why our Indian businesspersons are not making luxury cruise liner of smaller size with fewer facilities to cater the Indian tourists to the Lakshadweep?

Is this cruise vessel meets the International safety norms and equipped with all safety equipments like floating jackets in water, wireless communication system etc. as we are much behind to many developed countries in safety norms and adhering the same. Nothing wrong in knowing our limitations and rectifying it.
