Mangalore, Aug 28: Following the rise in the prices of petrol and diesel some time back, the district administration has given its nod to an increase in the minimum fare for autorickshaws as well.

Addressing a regional transport meeting here on Saturday August 28, deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj informed that autorickshaws will now charge a minimum fare of Rs 15, that is Rs 2 more than the present fare. Also, Rs 11 will be charged for every kilometre thereafter.

The revised rates will be effective from September 10. The autorickshaws will get upgraded metres from October 1, Ponnuraj said and added that until then the auto drivers will be asked to use rate cards and charge accordingly.

The DC also informed that autodrivers have been directed to put up their photographs, names and nameplate numbers on their vehicles.

Also, pre-paid auto service will be installed at KSRTC bus stand and at central railway station. Auto drivers will be allowed to charge extra, amounting to half of the minimum charge on the metre from 10 pm to 6 am.

Moreover, auto drivers will have the choice to stay or to leave if they are made to wait for more than 45 minutes for a passenger. If the driver is made to wait for more than 15 minutes, the charge would be 25 percent of the metre charge. However, the driver cannot demand extra fare for waiting for under 15 minutes, he said.

It may be recalled that on August 17, Daijiworld had carried an exclusive report on the autorickshaw in the city, focussing on the common complaints that passengers had against some of the drivers. The report elicited a huge response with readers sharing numerous instances whererin the drivers charged more than the regular fare, especially while plying from the railway station or the bus stand. It is hoped that the pre-paid service will work effectively to alleviate this problem.

I am away from Kinnigoli bus stand to my residence at Padmanoor, it's 1.5 Kms, rickshaw drivers charge me from Rs,20 to Rs 25, rickshaws don't have meters here. Anyway why blame them, when the total country is dwelling on coruption, mainly our political leaders.

With the escalation of costs in fuel and repairs and maintenance the additional fare is legitimate but it hoped that rickshaw drivers will not be too greedy and put forward unnecessary demands from commuters. The Law Enforcement department should make sure that the rickshaw drivers take passengers to their destinations without stipulating conditions.

I was recently in Kerala our neighbouring State and was surprised to see that the Autos still charged a minimum of Rs 10/= compared to Rs 13/- in our state and now they want to further increase to Rs 15/= I really dont understand why the Authorities implement the hike without justification. Its day light robbery and burden to the residents of Karnataka.

It is good to have minimum standard rate, once the std meter implemented, but my own relatives working as a auto professions, says, when they go for passing of auto annually, they will fix the other meter which is standard one what govt prescribed, and autohrities check and says ok, auto is PASSED, he pays little commsision to the agent for passing, once auto comes out he removed this machine, and they will fit their ordingary one which can charge more according to ration versers, who know,s this, how to check this type of incidents, poor customers are the victims of this know, wheather authorities will wake up for this issue, they make surprise check in the middle of the road, perhaps it might be controlled. authorities pl check, BUT THIS IS TRUE.

It is a good thing that minimum fare for autos in Mangalore will be implemented.New rates appear reasonable. It is also a good direction by DC to all auto drivers to exhibit their particulars along with photo in autos.New rates could have been implemented with immediate effect by using rate card.Fixing cut off date as Sept 10 for introducing new fare is not justifiable. In Bangalore central railway station pre paid auto system is excellent which is very useful for new/outsiders who come to Bangalore.Unlike Mangalore malpractice among autos in Bangalore is rampent.

    Dear M Bhat, Udupi/ AbuDhabi,

Actually, I partially disagree with you. The standard of living is slightly higher in Mangalore than Udupi. For example: your everyday vegetables cost more in mangalore than udupi. Even non-veg items like fish/chicken is slightly more in Mangalore. Also, potholes are less in mangalore than in udupi, because of road concreting everywhere. Therefore, people in mangalore enjoy a better standard of living. Only problem is mangalore has a perennial water shortage and the annoying mosquito problem which can reduce your standard of living - but this issue has no effect on the prices of everyday commodities, which are more higher in mlore than udupi.

So, auto charge should be lesser in udupi than in mangalore - not sure why it is the other way around in udupi.

Barring some very stray incidents, I have found, during the course of my annual visits to Mangalore stretching over 30 years, that the autorickshaw drivers are reasonable, honest and a cut above the rest in India.

Dear Mangloreans you are better luckier than the people of Udupi. Because Auto fair in Udupi is still more higher than Mangalore. I feel it better to make uniformal Auto fair through out costal districts because every where road condition and standard of life of people so what same. Authorities has to think on this matter.

Also these Autorickshaw drivers should be more helpful to the public. because if you go to the pumpwell rickshaw stand and ask to go some where they refuse to go, because they are waiting for a long trip, those kind of rickshaw drivers should keep thier reckshaw at home.. if the rickshaw is not usefull for the public, then they are waste keeping their rickshaw at the stand......... public also want good service ...keep this in mind....

Good, the minimum charge henceforth in Mangalore will be 15 rupees. But this 15 rupees already implemented in Udupi city since last 2 years back. The drivers in Udupi city practically looters, the moment you get-up and get-down, minimum will be 15/- after that next stage it will be 25/- Respected District Authority should have some control on this issue immediately.
