Mangalore: Fish Markets in Coastal Districts to be Modernised - Shetty

Mangalore Jul 16: CDA chairman B Nagaraj Shetty has said that the government has been spending thousands of crores over the past few years in development projects like construction of airport, highways, bridges, new roads etc.

Addressing a press meet at the Coastal Development Authority (CDA) office here on Friday July 16, he stated that he was thankful to Yogish Bhat and Krishna J Palemar who had contributed significantly to the growth of the district.

There was a presentation on quality implementation, as per the vision of the Authority and the chief minister. The presentation consisted of modern fish markets in Coastal Karnataka like Padubidri, Uppunda, Shirali, Ankola, Karwar which will be modernized as per the project. Bantwal fish market will be shifted to a new spacious location. Fisheries in DK, Udupi and North Karnataka will be connected to National Highway 17, he added.

The new fish markets will be provided with modern storage boxes and the seats of the fisherwomen will be equipped with locking facility to store the unsold fish.

He further said that as DK and Udupi districts are growing the number of vehicles plying from different states to the city is also increasing which has taken its toll on the condition of National Highways 13, 17 and 48. Hence, various projects including widening of the highways, constructing inter-connected roads and direct link road to the airport from Manipal, are on the cards.

CDA will hold an interaction programme in September to discuss its vision for the next 25 to 30 years.

CDA members Ravindranath hedge, Vittala Devimane, Sulochana and CDA Secretary   Prabhakar Rao were also present at the press meet.

    i really agree with Mehgana Shetty & Girish Saralpady, The so called representatives pls concentrate on the Necessary basics things, at present our city required is clean drinking water & proper drainage system.

    Fully agree with Girish as to why good fish is not available to common man in Mangalore ?

    Agriculturists are backbone of our nation. The Govt. is collecting a part of their hard erned produce in the form of levy for the benifit of rest of society.

    Why not Govt. plan the similar system in to fish distribution system ?

    Shettre. The corporation has demolised Bejai Market three years back. All the vendors meat, fish and vegetables are selling the product close to bejai church compound in temporary sheds. There was no sign of any construction of new market in Bejai so far. This is just 50 meters away from your house. Hence please do not fool people.

    NICE TO READ THOUSANDS OF CRORES SPENT TO DEVELOP COASTAL DEVELOPMENT.

    LOOKS LIKE cOASTLINE WILL BECOME LIKE SINGAPORE ??????

    ARE THE PEOPLES REPRESENTATIVES AWARE THAT MANGALOREANS DRINK DIRTY OR CONTAMINATED OR CHEMICALLY TREATED DRINKING WATER?

    MANGALORE'S UNDERGROUND DRAINAGE SYSTEM IS A TOTAL FAILURE FOR THE REASON THAT DRAIN WATER SEEP IN TO OPEN WELLS AND IN SOME CASES TO BOREWELLS TOO !

    ADDING TO THIS, DRAIN WATER IS FLOWING OUT OPENLY THROUGH THE STREAMS (FORMERLY RAIN WATER WAS FLOWING THROUGH THESE STREAMS) - VISIT PLACES LIKE, KADRI, BEJAI, PUMPWELL, ATTAVAR ETC. THE SAME WATER SPRINGS INTO OPEN WELLS !!!

    WATER COMING TO THE CITY FROM THUMBAY/DAM, NO PRECAUTION IS IN PLACE TO STOP THROWING
    HUMAN/HOSPITAL WASTE, THROWING DEAD ANIMALS/CHICKENS, WASHING ANIMALS/CLOTHS ETC. THERE IS NO PROPER WATER CLEANING SYSTEM. THERE IS NO CONTROL/TESTING ON HOW MUCH CHEMICALS MIXED IN ORDER TO PURIFY THE WATER !!!!

    ALL THAT IS REQUIRED FIRST IS:

    A) PROPER DRAINAGE SYSTEM.

    B) CLEAN DRINKING WATER.

    C) ESTABLISH WATER TESTING LABS. - ( NOT TO COST RS.500 TO 1500 FOR
    SINGLE TESTING ???)

    D) SHOW SOME CONCERN ON PEOPLE'S
    BASIC HEALTH.

    Ordinary citizens/tax payers feel:

    1. Inspite of providing tax payer's money to subsidise deisel/boats/nets people in authority should find out why fish cought in Mangalore is not available for Mangaloreans? One mackeral costs Rs.25/=

    2. If there is fish famine, how fishermen get fish in our neighbouring state Kerala?

    3. In Bombay, inspite of huge population/demand, you can get good fish for about Rs.50/= whereas in Mangalore even if we spend Rs.100/= we cannot get good fish? Surmayi/Pomphret fish is beyond reach of even middle class economy people. Cost of this fish is quoted between Rs. 400 to 500 !!!!

    Can the people's representatives and Mr. Nagaraj Shetty find out why common people cannot get fish in Mangalore at affordable prices?

    A welcome move by the concerned authorities and a similar move is required for the meat Market too.It should be out of the city and connecting to the national highway to keep the inner city clean and to reduce the unnecessary traffic in the morning during the school time.
