Udupi: Marina to be built only after studying adverse effects, assures MLA

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Jan 17: Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat on Sunday January 17 allayed fears regarding the proposed marina construction (dock for yachts and small boats) at Padukere and assured that the project would be allowed only after a study is conducted and it is found to be feasible.

"A marina is being constructed at Padukere beach under the Sagarmala project of the central government. The only other marina is in Kochi which can accomodate international boats and tourist ships. A sum of Rs 800 crore has been alloted for the marina under Sagarmala project of the central government. However, this project is not sanctioned yet," said Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat.

The proposed marina construction has been strongly opposed by local fishermen. Responding to the opposition, MLA Bhat said, "The central government agency Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) has given directions to study the probability of this project in Padukere. Sea waves, effects of marina on fishing and all the other issues will be studied by this agency. Within eight months a report will be prepared.

"Once the report is available we will have a discussion with the fishermen and the locals. The marina project will come up only if there are no problems or adverse effects on the fishing community and locals. Coastal Development Authority has sanctioned Rs 71 lac for the study of CWPRS. Based on the report further decisions will be taken," he said.

"All the necessary steps for sanitation and cleanliness will be taken. This project will serve for the benefit of the entire nation," he added.

Earlier on January 15, fishermen leaders urged for withdrawal of the marina project on Padukere beach. They also maintained that they would meet chief minister, B S Yediyurappa, during his visit to the city on January 18, and draw his attention to the issue. They also stated that they will oppose anything that is not related to fishing and which creates problems for the fishing activity.

If Marina comes up it will be under Customs control. All other activities will be regulated as per International Maritime Law. It will become same like New Mangalore Port trust. No fishing boats will be allowed at restricted area.

71 Lakh for study of the adverse impact . Now we know why the fishermen protested in the first place.
Its well orchestrated ..and if it is for something good ,then I am not against it .
Let the Marina come up ..its progressive thinking and will do good . Why oppose when you know nothing about it .It has been a standard practice to oppose anything and everything .From what I hear there are no more fishermen left in this region ..,all boats are now operated by imported humans from Tamil nadu and other places ..So I do not know the authenticity of this so called protest.

Langoocharya, do you know that there is marine life in the sands of the beach. It is crucial for maintaining ecosystem. Please, listen to science, not your own intuition.
