Sullia, Jan 16: In modern times, handling waste has become a complex issue. The waste that is generated by humans, not only affects the environment but also causes many diseases. However, an agriculturist in the taluk is turning the wet waste of town panchayat into high quality manure. He collects nearly one to two tonne of waste from the town and manufactures the same amount of manure.
This unique agriculturist, who is helping the Sullia town panchayat to turn the wet waste into manure is Vinod Lasrado. His farm has become a sort of dumping yard to the Sullia town panchayat. Long ago, five acres of land was identified on the outskirts of the town to dump the solid and wet waste that is generated in the town. However, that land is beyond use now as the waste is dumped in an unscientific manner.
When there was no space to dump the waste generated in Sullia town, Vinod came to the aid of Sullia town panchayat. He allowed the Sullia town panchayat wet waste to be dumped in his farm land and produced manure of high quality from the same. Nearly one and a half to two tonnes of wet waste, without any plastic waste, is arriving at his farm every day.
Vinod takes care to arrange the wet waste in a systematic manner so that no foul smell or generation of mosquitoes or worms takes place. He puts wet leaves on the wet waste every day. After the wet waste is dumped to a certain extent cow dung water and other organic solvents are poured on it. These solvents prevent foul smell as well as control the production of mosquitoes and other insects.
Only three cents of land is used to dump the wet waste that is collected from Sullia town. Vinod has shown that there is no need for a huge area to dump the waste. He also suggests that all agriculturists can follow this method to produce high quality manure.
The wet waste that is kept systematically, turns into wet manure after six months. Vinod uses the manure he requires for his farm and distributes the excess to other farmers. He also donates free manure to the trees and plants that are planted on the road side and schools. On the whole Vinod is playing a vital role in keeping the Sullia town clean.
