Mangaluru, Nov 27: The work of planting the saplings after the monsoon season has started in the coastal region of the state. Only 20% of the planting of the paddy sapling is done.
In the district of Udupi, though the target is 4,000 hectares, planting of paddy sapling is done only on 840 hectares. Out of this 830 hectares, planting is done in the taluk of Karkala and 10 hectares in Kundapur.
In Dakshina Kannada, the target is to plant paddy saplings on an area of 4,895 hectares. However, as of now, the work is completed only on 930 hectares. Out of which, sapling planting is done on 433 hectares in the taluk of Mangaluru, 450 hectares in the taluk of Bantwal, 21 hectares in Puttur and 26 hectares in Sullia.
Along with paddy, in the district of Udupi, there is a target to sow black gram on the 3,000-hectare area. But only 964 hectares is done now. Out of this 698 hectares in Udupi, 250 hectares in Kundapur, 16 hectares in Karkala. Horsegram is sown on 1,806 hectares whereas the target is 9,150 hectares. The target for groundnut is 1,800 hectares. However, the sowing has not yet started. The target set for Kota is 425 hectares and Kundapur is 1,375 hectares as per the details given by officials of the agricultural department.
There is a demand of 286 quintals of sowing seeds for Rabi crop in the district of Dakshina Kannada. Only 159.12 quintals have been distributed as of now. Out of this 96.5 quintals are Jaya breed and 62.62 quintals are Jyothi breed. In the district of Udupi, there is a demand of 184 quintals, out of which 134 quintals have been distributed. This is given to farmers of the general category at a subsidized price of eight rupees. 120 quintal Groundnut seeds are in stock in Byndoor, while in Kota and Kundapur, the stock is 200 and 50 quintals respectively. However, the distribution is yet to start.
Harvesting of Kharif crop is in its final stages. In Udupi and Dakshina Kannada 90% and 97% respectively are completed. In the district of Dakshina Kannada, the target for harvesting is 10,260 hectares but the crop has exceeded the target and is grown on an area of 11,247 hectares. Harvesting is completed on an area of 10,876 hectares. In Beltangady and Sullia 100% Harvesting is done. In Mangaluru 97% harvesting is done. In Bantwal and Puttur 95% harvesting is completed. Harvesting is remaining only in areas where the planting of saplings was done a little late. However, it is expected to get completed in another 10 to 15 days.
