'J&K up for sale': Omar Abdullah slams new land law

Srinagar, Oct 27 (IANS): National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Wednesday hit out the new land laws notified by the Centre for Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, terming it a "deceit" and a "wanton breach of trust".

Calling the J&K Development Act, which has come into force with immediate effect, as hostile to the interests of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, Abdullah, a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, contended that the amendments to the land ownership law has put J&K "up for sale".

"With these new laws in place, tokenism of the domicile certificate has been done away with as purchasing non-agricultural land has been made easier. These new laws are unacceptable to people of J&K, Ladakh," he said.

"The BJP remains unchallenged in the opportunistic politics and that the issuance of the amended land rules notification smacks of its cheap politics and deceit," he said.

"Interestingly the Centre waited till the elections to LAHDC had concluded and the BJP had won a majority before putting Ladakh also up for sale. This is what Ladakhis got for trusting the assurances of the BJP," he said.

"The new laws are a consequence of the measures undertaken by the GOI on 5th of August without democratic bearings and much to the resentment and anger of the region's populace.

"The measure reflects the wanton breach of trust of the people of J&K by a dispensation which is brewing with abhorrence for the diversity of the country and the democracy. The measures are also part of a larger design aimed to destroy the local, distinctive cultural identity of Kashmir, thereby giving a ditch to the successive promises made by the successive Central governments from time to time," he said.

"Such measures reveal that it is not the people's aspirations which matters to the ruling dispensation at New Delhi, it is rather the land which they want to hold on and are interested in," Abdullah added.

After 70 years of independence, the foremost regional leaders are still talking of domicile laws. No wonder J&K had been lost to their own indigenous people. An integrated country would not be eyed by the poaching neighbors. Unite for a strong India and celebrate the beauty of J&K. Let it not be a dream anymore.

If the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh who own their land do not want to sell the land to Indians from other states, then let them refuse to sell. People from outside can buy only if the owners are willing to sell . There are millions of North Indians who have bought property in Mumbai and Bengaluru so what is the problem if someone from outside buys your land for an acceptable price .

The recent farmer's bill and land sale in Kashmir has same vested interest for the govt. Both are done without the consent, input from the concerned parties and unconstitutionally but the govt has unanimously done it forcefully in an undemocratic way for its own selfish interest.

I am not sure how can this move be wrong. J&K is part of India like any other states where people are free to buy land. I will be surprised Abdualla's and Muftis not owning land outside J&K. Stop fooling people. Great move. Yes Kashmiri are allowed to purchase property and do business in rest of India since beginning but not vice versa.

When Kashmiris study, work, buy property & settle all over India eating in to other state people's lively hood , why others should not do it in J&K?

Whose consent? Its a Govt elected by majority. The opposition leader should try and win his constituency first. Why should Kashmir land be special only for Kashmiris? Any Indian should be able to settle , work and live anywhere in India. Dont we have Kashmiri's coming to Blore and Mlore for studies and work and living there. No big deal. Muftis and Mehboobs children and relatives are living elsewhere. They have even polluted the western countries.

Land has not been put on sale in Kashmir. Any Kashmiri interested in selling his land can now sell to any citizen of India, which means a landowner will have a wider and better choice now. Any citizen from other states will have the right to buy property in Kashmir which also means the seller in Kashmir can get better price for his property. It is the same right that Kashmiris had been enjoying for the past 70 years but denied to citizens of other states.
A bill that has been passed by the majority in Parliament is not called unconstitutional and undemocratic. The law has been enacted in the interest of the nation, viz. to bring about national integrity.
