Udupi, Oct 21: The district police observed Martyrs Day on Wednesday, October 21 near district armed police quarter in Chandu Maidan here.

Addressing the gathering, the guest of the occasion deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said, "Making Udupi free of the drug menace is our aim. A team led by the district superintendent of police has done well in the fight against drugs. This process must be continuous. Drug addiction should be controlled through conducting awareness campaign."

"Police will always be for the protection of people in time of an emergency. Police performance is commendable in handling the coronavirus situation along the district borders including other areas. The police personnel are also required to be fit mentally and physically. Staying loyal to their duty will help everyone lead a peaceful and comfortable life in society," he added.

Prior to the event, the guests of the occasion and dignitaries offered bouquets to the martyred police statue.

District superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhan gave a brief overview of the policemen who were martyred in the past one year. 'A total of 264 policemen in the entire country and 17 policemen in Karnataka have sacrificed their life,' he said.

The police flag was flown at half mast for two minutes in order to honour the fallen heroes.

District armed force police inspector Murthy S Naik led the parade.

Additional district commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu and additional superintendent of police Kumarachandra were present on the dais.

Udupi police circle inspector Manjunath compered the programme.

    Just a request ban cigarettes and gutkas that is the main culprit. Every nook and corner there is a shop which spoils the area. The police should be given a free hand for this cleaning.
