What to Expect from India at the 2020 Summer Olympics

October 20, 2020 (pr)

Though the 2020 Summer Olympics have been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, they will retain their 2020-centric branding, as well as the original name. India has never been among the top of the medal charts in the world’s most prestigious sporting event, but the country’s people are hoping that the upcoming edition is far better than the disappointment that was Rio de Janeiro. In this article, we’ll take you through the prospects of the Indian contingent, discussing everything from some notable athletes expected to partake in the Olympics, as well as the odds being offered on Team India related bets.

Looking Back at Rio, Looking Forward to Tokyo

The last iteration of the Olympic Games was as forgettable as it typically is for Indians. Though the 117 man delegation was the largest the country had ever sent to the tournament, India only managed a measly two medals; a silver in Badminton and a bronze in Wrestling. On paper, this was a disappointingly low tally for a nation of India’s stature, but this was the joint third highest medal tally for the nation. Beijing and London, the two Olympics before Rio, are in second and first place respectively, meaning that expectations in 2016 were higher than ever. Needless to say, Indian fans and athletes alike will be hoping and praying for a much better showing in Japan next year.

Thus far, the Indian team for the 2021 Olympics has 74 confirmed names. 32 of these are from the men’s and women’s field hockey teams, whereas a number of boxers, wrestlers, shooters, field athletes, archers and one equestrian have also booked their tickets. This in itself is a strong number, but a few dozen competitors are predicted to join in, particularly in sports like Badminton and Tennis where India stands a chance of getting a podium position.

Out of the already qualified sportsmen, one would predict that India’s young shooters have a great shot at getting a medal in light of their impressive tallies in recent World Championships. Veteran boxer and serial winner Mary Kom is also another shoo-in for a medal berth, while good performances are expected from her fellow boxers Amit Panghal and Lovlina Borgohain. The men’s field hockey team is the most successful field hockey team in Olympic history, but in recent years has fallen behind rivals like the Netherlands and Australia. Despite this, the game is India’s national sport and most will be expecting a top five finish from the team in Tokyo. All things considered, there is a lot to be excited about for the Indian public, but it’ll all be up to the team to deliver at the world’s biggest stage.

Odds Watch

Due to the Olympics still being a fair few months away, major gambling sites in India haven’t yet published their odds. Some sports are still yet to finish their qualification cycle, meaning that the lineup and schedule is yet incomplete. Those patiently waiting for the odds to be uploaded should keep an eye out on some of the best gambling sites offerings.
