NIA questions Vijayan's former Secretary for 4th time in gold scam

Kochi, Sep 24 (IANS): M. Sivasankar, Kerala's senior IAS official and former secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is being questioned on Thursday along with Swapna Suresh, prime accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case, by the NIA officials at their office.

This is the fourth time when Sivasankar is being questioned by the NIA, but the first time that it's being done in the company of Swapna.

The gold smuggling case first surfaced when P.S. Sarith, a former employee of the UAE Consulate here, was arrested by the Customs Department on July 5 when he was allegedly facilitating the smuggling of 30 kg gold in diplomatic baggage from Dubai to Thiruvananthapuram.

The case became murkier when Swapna, a former employee of the UAE Consulate and later employed with the IT Department, came to light. Her links with Sivasankar came up later during the investigation and she later revealed that he was her mentor.

After his links with Swapna surfaced, Vijayan first removed him from the post of his secretary and also the State IT secretary and later suspended him from service.

The investigation is turning counter productive with each passing day with nothing substantial emerging except it being a Tax evasion case. Regretfully the trial by the media continues.

What is intriguing is that no media house is harping of the role of the Attache in the UAE Consulate in Trivandrum in the Gold smuggling case despite evidence of his involvment. The silence of the UAE Govt is also baffling that not one press release to clarify the role of their Attache in the Consulate to the Gold Smuggling or to the parcels handed over to Minister Jaleel for distribution to our citizens or for that matter on any issue concerning our citizens because of their linkage to the Consulate.
