Mangaluru, Aug 15: The staff members of St Aloysius Institute of Education, a leading institute of teacher education of the city celebrated the 74th Independence Day with great zeal and love.
Dr Farita Viegas, principal of the institute, marked the day by hoisting the National Flag on the campus. Speaking on the occasion, the principal said, “It is a day for us to recall the sacrifices of freedom martyrs and their ideals. Independence Day reminds us of freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of faith, freedom of movement and freedom of worship as enshrined in the Constitution. Our forefathers wanted justice and equality of status and opportunity and also free from poverty. India has done considerable progress in achieving political freedom after gaining independence from foreign rule, but poverty, corruption, health, malnutrition, unemployment are the greatest challenges that India now needs to overcome and a common goal is needed for this.” She also insisted we need to overcome from self inferiority, fear of failure, nervousness and embarrassment to be productive, creative and dynamic citizens in Independent India.
The college had organized a speech via an online-google-meet digital platform for the students. Srinivas Nandagopal, editor, The Times of India-Mangalore edition, was the speaker. He said, “Independence Day observation is an important and auspicious occasion among the various celebrations of India. This commemoration is an occasion for us to make new resolutions to take the nation to new heights with new ideas and energy. India did not attain freedom free of cost, but innumerable efforts and undeterred determination were the causes of this achievement.” Citing Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, 'You must be the change that you wish to see in the world', the chief guest said, nothing can be achieved in our personal lives if we keep blaming the government, bureaucrats, local self bodies and the politicians. If we want to see a change in ourselves and our places we should be accountable to our words through our deeds. Mahatma Gandhi through his actions had always exemplified what he advocated to others. His life became a testimony of truth and non-violence. Personal freedom is a big part of our lives like the political freedom that can be enjoyed by taking responsibility, being accountable, stable, courageous and self-dependant," he added.
Ramyalaxmi invoked God’s blessings through a prayer song. Prithvi Bhat delivered the welcome address. Neha introduced the speaker. Flavita D’Souza rendered the vote of thanks. Demcy D’Souza compered the programme. Santhosh Furtado, staff in-charge organized the programme.
