Mangaluru: Former minister Ramanath Rai seeks clarification on electricity bill from MESCOM

Mangaluru, Jun 4: Former minister Ramanath Rai addressed the media here on Thursday June 4, and questioned Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (MESCOM) over hike in electricity bills creating burden to the citizens already troubled due to the lockdown imposed over the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking to the media, Rai said, "There is a lot of confusion over payment of electricity bills. It is a burden for people to pay the bill of three months together. The chief minister and district in-charge minister have asked not to pay the bills while MESCOM has not clarified yet if the bill should be paid or not. MESCOM should be clear about their stand on this issue.

"We cannot take this issue lightly. This is injustice to the people at the time of corona. We will raise our voices and fight against the issue if it is not sorted out,” Rai said.

He said while the BJP government is hailing its two years’ achievements, they have privatized airport, port, BSNL, insurance company and the electricity company is on the verge of getting privatized.

He accused the ruling government to have emotionally manipulated and fooled the people taking up sensitive issues in the past two years but have never worked for the progress of the nation rather they have favoured investors, rich and businessmen and neglected the weaker sections. He said that the BJP has concentrated on money, marketing and publicity but not in development.

When asked about the renaming of flyovers controversy, Rai said, "We strongly oppose this move and this is another method to fool people. Koti Chennaya name can be given but to a different place and not to Nehru Maidan which is named after Jawaharlal Nehru."

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, Congress leaders Ibrahim Kodijal, Abdul Rauf, Ashok D K, Sahul Hameed, Shalet Pinto were present.

    In the best interests of Congress, I would suggest that these outdated leaders take the back seat and groom youngsters. I dread to think that Rai wold be contesting again from Congress.

    Mescom issues were faught by me individually without any help of politicians or any media publicity . The fact is slab of Rs 7.80 is where lies the hitch. Thats why I went to mescom revenue section Made them to make a seperate bill for Match to April, April to May and paid both bills monthly. Covid times taught me to be very very particular and responsible about consumption of electricity units. I check the meter everyday which is investment of 1 minute in the whole day. This has helped me to be calculative and bringing down electricity consumption to average 7 units a day during peak summer in May 2020, using airconditioner for 8 hours at night. Now that the monsoon has arrived, am seing no usevof airconditioner abd my average usage in last 3 days is limited to 3 units a day. There is no point in blaming anyone or politicising. It was DK Shivakumar who increased Rs. 1.39 paisa during Congress tegime directly to pocket it to Congress coffers. When BJP came to power they are following old Congress policy without checking whether corrupt policies of previous government is causing loss or profit to present government, at the same time creating alot of pain to consumers in Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada. When asked by me to mescom, they are giving only policy matters which I compiled and filing a PIL in high court of Karnataka to review mescom policy. By the time I got to login to the Karnataka high court to review the mescom policy which is highest electricity tariff in India, lockdown was announced. However I will file it once the courts accept petitions. People who are interested to join me please WhatsApp me at 6369197933. You have no investment in filing the petition for change in policy. Am an advocate so I will file it and fight it. I will be happy if public raises their concerns. Its vital in participatory democracy. This petition if implemented by the direction of the Honourable high court of Karnataka will be a landmark judgement to usher in a change .

    Yes d.k. shiv kumar was responsible..
    I believe karnataka people are paying about 1 Rupee more for each unit consumption.
    Electricity distribution happens with same old infrastructure and they generate electricity with many natural sources as well.. So i think cost per unit should be reduced..

    Hi all,
    When I Electricity bill on 18th May, even I was shocked. Usually I get around Rs.1800 per month(avg units consumption is around 230+). This time it was mentioned Total Amount 5134 before deduction of prev month paid amount, after deduction it was 3358 around for 446 units consumed since April 18 to May 18, that's becoz continuous running of fans literally 24x7.
    Units are correct as per consumption.
    When I calculated the Bill amount I felt something wrong. Later my friend explained to me that the bill calculation is correct.
    Old bill structure:
    Rs1.00 x 60 units
    Rs2.00x70 units
    30 unitsxRs 3. 70
    70unitsxRs5.20
    100unitsxRs6.75
    40unitsxRs7.80

    Apr+may
    Rs2.03 x 60units
    Rs4.07x70units
    61unitsxRs3.75(61 units instead of 30 units to consider prev month units)
    142unitsxRs5.20(142 units instead of 70)
    203unitsxRs6.75(200 units instead of 100)
    256unitsxRs7.80
    NOTE THAT 1ST TWO SLABS UNITS KEPT SAME BUT AMOUNT DOUBLED, which is same Double the unit and keep amount same.
    Rest of the slab they have doubled the units but kept the price per unit same.

    Mescom has calculated in right way.
    Other wise if they Had done for 643 units (apr+may)
    1.00x60units=60
    2.00x70units=140
    30unitsx3.70=111
    70unitsx5.20=364
    100unitsx6.75=675
    333unitsx7.80 =2598
    Total =3948 though you will see that amount is much lower, this calculation is incorrect 😊

    I have an issue with your calculation.
    "NOTE THAT 1ST TWO SLABS UNITS KEPT SAME BUT AMOUNT DOUBLED, which is same Double the unit and keep amount same."

    This is not true, because by doubling the cost (rs1) instead of unit quota (60), more units get put into the higher slab.

    Logically the unit quota should be doubled. If the first 60 is charged at Rs.1 for a month, then for two months the first 120 should be charged at Rs. 1 . If calculated this way less units fall into the higher slabs which is fair, since the bill is for two months.

    Yes Sir/ MAM,
    You are absolutely correct. 260 units must have been included in first slab instead of 130.

    I just rechecked. I want to make a correction.
    I had mentioned about 1st two slabs, infact the first two slabs are not applicable to us. Actual calc starts from 30 unitsxRs 3. 70 slab for LT2(A) Urban.

    I am rephrasing it.

    Old bill structure:
    30 unitsxRs 3. 70
    70unitsxRs5.20
    100unitsxRs6.75
    40unitsxRs7.80

    NEW BILL STRUCTURE: Apr+may
    61unitsxRs3.75(61 units instead of 30 units to consider prev month UNITS Combinee)
    142unitsxRs5.20(142 units instead of 70 units to consider prev months units combined)
    203unitsxRs6.75(200 units instead of 100 pre months units combined)
    256unitsxRs7.80

    Mescom has calculated in right way.
    And if you had paid April month bill, there is a deduction of amount.
    I had paid 1777 for April month, and they have deducted this amount from total amount in May bill.

    Being a citizen I too was shocked to see a combined bill from March 22 to May 22. Due to this tactic of clubbing two months bill at once, higher slab rate is used cunningly claiming higher units are used.
    As a result of this, I got a combined bill of Rs 6400 for two months of lockdown whereas before lockdown I was paying a monthly bill of average Rs 1500.
    I was forced to pay this bill as later if we exceed due date interest will be applicable to loot citizens like us.

    Just check whether they have mentioned correct number of units consumed from your meter readings...
    For 2 months .. first 60 units one slab, 60-200 units 2nd slab rate...
    Add everything you get bill..
    Over that you have gst plus interest.. plus previous dues if any😅
