Mangaluru: Pregnant lady in quarantine reportedly deprived of timely care, baby dies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 28: Dakshina Kannada district was in news some time ago after a corona-infected casualty’s body was not allowed to be cremated. Now, in a heart-rending incident, a pregnant woman in quarantine reportedly did not get timely treatment. It is said that on account of this lapse, the baby died in her womb.

The woman in question had settled down in Dubai with her husband. She wanted to come to the city for delivery, and after she applied for travelling to Mangaluru, she got an opportunity to travel by the first flight. She arrived at the airport on May 12 and thereafter she was taken to her room for hotel quarantine. The test conducted next day gave negative report.

Aziz Bastikar, maternal uncle of the pregnant lady, said that the district administration had assured that services of doctors, nurses, and assistants along with other facilities were readily available at the quarantine. "However, for the doctor to come, we had to call thrice every time and bring pressure. Even when the doctors came, they used to forget the BP kit. Perhaps this was a ploy to avoid physical contact with the patient," he felt.

Pregnant ladies who test negative can be subjected to home quarantine, the government had said. On this basis, a letter from the district administration was procured and arrangement to shift her to a flat near Shivbagh area was made. But the residents of the said apartment complex, where many retired and current senior police officers reside, reportedly provided a glimpse of their inhuman nature by decently refusing her request to move in there.

Even before the woman reached the city, arrangements had been made to provide treatment to her through a private hospital here in the city. A doctor had concurred to treat her if the first test report is negative. Bastikar said that even though the report was negative, the doctor concerned escaped later by saying that he can treat the lady only after 14 days.

"As soon as the second test report came as negative, we went to a private clinic in the city for treatment. The doctors observed that the situation is grave and to save the life of the mother, forced delivery would have to be performed. The child had by then died in the womb itself," he lamented.

Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, said that immediately after the first report came as negative, the lady was sent home. She said that if the woman feels that she has faced injustice, she can file a complaint. She promised to inquire into why she was not allowed into the flat and who the doctors were and hospitals who refused to treat her.

This is the ground reality, believe it or not, majority of real CORONA warriors are the interns, final year students, nurses & lower end staff as no senior doctor dares visit CORONA patients, they, reportedly, give advise on videophone; some doctors have become so phobic of CORONA that they are not ready to touch case papers of CORONA patients for fear of contact infection,& reprimand their juniors to do only teleconsulting; so much for this supposedly noble profession! Each & every profession has an inherent risk; running away from responsibility (risk) when all protective equipment is available is simply cowardly act & brings disgrace to the profession! There are many more horor stories from across the country, which are not worth mentioning here....

Compare this with the AI staff from the pilots to airhostesses who confidentally wholeheartedly volunteered to evacuate a large number of trapped NRI people despite being from nonmedical field & no extra monetary gains? That's the spirit of confidence & helping!

Despite submitting CORONA -ve certificate not taking up the patient for emergency treatment at last moment is highly condemnable from a qualified doc; if found guilty, he should be suspended!

Educated professionals residing in a building refusing accommodation to a heavily pregnant lady too shows how much of wisdom & humanity is left with the so called individuals!

Regarding the frequent news of a reputed pvt hospital being responsible for spread of CORONA, IMHO, seems to be a concerted effort by business rivals as it had made a good name for itself in a short span!!
Surprisingly; now when CORONA is actually spiking up, authorities have decided to open up almost everything; even malls are in line of i am not mistaken! Now, then what actually this 2+ month breakdown hype hoopla benefit in combating CORONA? God forbade, if there is a second wave in winter, we'll have no place to hide!
Above is a very personal & generic opinion, do it own research!

Everyone speaks as if heor she knows about every subject on earth. Lockdown had its own scientific reason including giving time for people to improve their immunity and spruce up antibodies in the body which were confused in the early stages not knowing whether covid 19 is a freind or enemy. Also it was aimed at breaking the chain. Luckily timely action has saved thousands of lives. But Indians take it easy because we have low death rates. That is why now the recovery rate is constantly improving. If you have anything against any govts pl keep it aside at this juncture at least.

Of course facility is good.. But her situation might have forced her to travel.. For a first time mother it's not easy to take care of herself and baby after birth. Otherwise who will travel alone in this situation.. Just think before commenting.. Here Our mangalorean people and authorities who's responsible for this should be blamed.. Not poor mother who lost her baby😑she should get justice

No matter what happened in Mangalore with her and the medical team etc... my sympathy goes to the mother of that infant. But if we think practically, first of all she should not have come to India since the situation is not good during this Covid-19 period. She should have changed her mind and done her delivery in Dubai itself. She has taken risk coming from Dubai to Mangalore.

Now so many people loosing job and salary cut is done.. First know the situation.. Every girl want to be with her mother and family when pregnant and giving birth to new life.. It's not easy as you think.. Blame whos real culprit here.. Don't blame her.. Beware of karma.. It might hit you back to teach you how it feels! She traveled alone that itself shows how helpless she was.. No pregnant women wishes to face situation like this.. Have some mercy..

Smart city lacks 'Smart people'. Smart by looks is an illusion. To be smart there should be compulsion. In recent days Mangalore has lost everything.

The religious hatred is so much inflicted the damage to the society even in distress the city residence are not willing to help each other. More than the fear of pandemic it is untouchable in religious line.

It is collective failure of the administration as well as citizens of Mangalore.

This is what happens when media conducts trials and maligns private hospitals. First neuro hospital admitted patients to treat neurological emergencies and unfortunately one patient got covid. A huge ruckus was created by media and the hospital was thrashed endlessly for weeks and also their license was threatened. So why would any private hospital want to take the risk of treating a quarantined patient when not just their life but their profession and name is also at risk? Our media and people are such that even if you try to help someone they will try to spoil your name. Request media like daijiworld to please verify a news from both sides before publishing to avoid such repurcussions. Patient should have immediately gone to wenlock or any of the medical colleges which have facilites to handle such cases even if covid positive rather than waiting for a private hospital with lesser facilities

Easy to write what I have in my heart or mind but we need to ask questions to oneself

What is my contribution to India ?
Do I pay tax monthly ?
Have I sent money to Modi care or any Local organization during this period?
Have I given food to any  hungry family or Immigrant workers in Mangalore during lock down?
Have I helped anyone for the last rights when a poor fellow died and the family did not have money to cremate him
Have I helped any Poor girl who is stuck at home without getting married due to dowry payment ?
Have I helped any old poor peson hospitalized when he / she did not have money ?
If we have political or police influence did we use it for good purpose or screw someones happiness ?
If we do not do all these we will just make fun of everybody and become sadist day by day .
We even stand in one leg to forward half naked photo of a girl and be a reason for her to commit suicide.
When we criticize others we should have a strong base / reason and it should change their heart.
Go out of the way and help others and God / Nature will help you.

When we are inhuman to accept a pregnant lady into a vacant flat, whose reports are negative... where all educated and experienced people stay, why people want to open the religious places and worship invisible god?? Why?? Will god listen if you gather in large numbers and pray publicly for others to see... will god answer your prayer? This is the prayer showing concern/humanity/respect to each other... your conscience will be happy at the end of the day.... I welcome the clarification from DC too.... I don't think so that being a woman first, she will never continue to keep the pregnant lady in quarantine after obtaining negative report... Condolences to the bereaved mother.... As per the report in the first flight there were 38 pregnant ladies... What about them? Wish them all a safe delivery... God bless

When situation goes wrong we blame doctors and there are instances where even doctors get man handled by the same people whose life they try to save. But at the same time when things go right then we say that it 's our luck or fate and we forget all that's is done by Doctors. All doctors are not alike and there are quite a good number who really care for others life. I know what it takes to become or make some one a good doctor. It is criminal offence to treat any person from "quarantine d" as per Law. She should have gone to wenlock hospital once her report is negative. We know wt happened to a doctor in Bantwal for treating the patient before Govt order regarding carona epidemic

The doctor in bantwal failed to report to the concerned authorities about the treatment of a symptomatic patient...
Orders were given to report any person who might fall into the symptomatic category.
The doctor clearly failed to do that... and he was not treating a patient with a negative report.. there was a normal patient to him at the time.
Criminal proceedings against him is the right thing to do.

Here we have a pregnant woman who has 2 valid negative test report .
And no treatment other than covid 19 is provided in wenlock. They will be told to go to a private hospital.

Very Sad. This spoiled the name of Mangalore. Yesterday I commented, there is no need to fly back to India for deliveries. In Gulf there are best govt. Hospitals who takes care of pregnancy. This is eye opener for Pregnent ladies who wants to go back to India for delivery.

    Dear Mr anand
There are hospital to do the delivery but who will take care of the infant and mother after the discharge. They will require special care and special food that can Be possible from our own people. So every pregnant lady want to be with their family. When u go through with the same situation then u can understand.

Peoples who refused to treat her & people refused to allow her to the flat are the main accuse.
If their Mother or Sister or wife is in that place means they will do the same.
    Where is our humanity?
Covid19 is showing the real hidden faces of humanity.
Now no one needs Gulf returnees.
These people assumed curse of that toddler.
Those who have faith on Almighty will not do this.

Please can we name and shame the residents of that apartment who denied her stay along with the doctor who refused to treat her. They don't deserve even an inch of respect for this inhuman behaviour
