Much before the Creation of Konkany Websites, hardly a few names glittered in the Konkany field of Literature, the late VJP Saldanha (Kadaap), Chafra, CGS the Konkany Shakespeare and Rakno, Poinary, Mitr and Sevak Editors, but to me it is the great name LIYAB who had inspired a whole generation of children of my age group in the early 60s to LIKE and LOVE Konkany through his simple but meaningful children’s stories, the Contests like word and crossword puzzles in Konkany words, poems etc. for children in various categories…so much so that we used to eagerly wait week after week for the Rakno Weekly just to glance at LIYAB’s page….which was synonymous with the ‘SAVIO MANDAL’ which he created in the weekly for the young Konkany readers together with Rev.Fr.Alexander D’Souza (one of the most popular priests among the younger generation of those days.)

I also remember the camp they organized for the SAVIO MANDAL members and also the two prizes I won for composing and singing a Konkany song in the camp and winning a Word Puzzle when I was just 11 yrs old. But alas like Prophet Elias, a Chariot of Fire came down and took away our great LIYYAB…..but now we are glad he is back with the same smiling face…!!!!!!Long live Liyyab…!!!!!

Among the living legends of Konkany, I feel Daijiworld’s Walter, CGS, and the Great LIYAB deserve every best award and rewards for their contribution towards Konkany. I feel the Catholic Diocese of Mangalore, the Mand Sobhan group and other organizations should consider honouring this great man during any of their big occasions. Congratulation LIYYAB and to your children and grand children especially little nine year old Richa, who plays the Yamaha for the St.Don Bosco Children’s Choir of Doha together with Elreena Pinto, Amelita Martis and Ruth Quadros.
