Complaint filed against priest, six others for holding mass prayers at Padukone church

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Apr 10: A complaint is filed against Fr Fred Mascarenhas of St Antony Church of Padukone, Nada village, and six others for holding mass prayers in the church on Thursday, April 9, at 6.30 pm violating the lock down rules.

PDO of Nada gram panchayat received a complaint on April 9 saying that priest and six people are offering mass prayers at St Antony church. When the PDO visited the spot it was confirmed that the priest and six other people were indeed holding prayers.

The PDO brought the matter to the notice of Byndoor tahsildar Basappa P Poojary and taluk bailiff. The tahsildar and bailiff filed a complaint with the police accusing Fr Fred Mascarenhas and six others of violating the strict rules of lock down and urged to take suitable action under column 144 (3) CrPC.

PSI of Gangolli police station is investigating further.

Mass is a catholic worship. Only a priest can celebrate Mass. No diocese has banned Mass celebration. So a catholic priest can celebrate Mass. What is banned is public or devotees attending the Mass. This is in the view of the present lockdown.
What I would like to state is the 6 people who attended, who were they? Were they residents of the church premises like the junior priest or the cook or the sacristan. If yes then the church is their home. They are residents. Like we are residents of our home. Let's say we are 15 members in our family. Are we banned from offering prayers together in our home?
This incident is only to sensationalize things.

Great job.. Ha Ha... A Priest and six others charged for having mass prayers in a church during Holy Week and breaking lock down rules. If law applies equally for everyone, I want to know what action has been taken by the authorities about so many people attending a movie actors funeral which took place recently and was a news item in the TV.

In such a big church 6 plus 1 priest were offering mass service. Was not there a social distancing inside the church itself? Jealousy is the best name of filling FIR as if 600 people have gathered. Worthless , weightless FIR.

Whether it is 1 or 1000, when instruction is to close down religious places of worship, it has to be obeyed. When we ourselves are not cleaning our own homes, there is no point in condemning another's on how messy theirs is.

5 priests offering prayers in a closed place w/o inviting a crowd cannot be constued as violation of curfew; the same could be applied to a family of 5 offering prayers at home; only difference was they prayed in the church, but in a pvt affair!!!

The total number of persons are six. The people are be the who living in the church compound. So the parishioners or outsiders are not there. If a house has more than 5 members, are the extra person sent out. Maundy Thursday we require 12 apostle s. So this mass cannot be public gathering. So the complaint may be false and complainer background to be investigated for creating mess. This is media favorite

Each time I go to the shops during the lockdown period find 10 to 15 people at the vegetable and grocery shops . People don't maintain social distance . Today I saw a man at the vegetable shop saying maintain social distance and just few footsteps a cops was standing near to the shop who is on duty there not uttering a single word but acting as a audience . Why no complaints are filed nor any actions are taken . 6 people at the church became a gathering and large crowd in one shop is not a crowd .

This complaint has been filed by vested interests, and it doesn't carry any substance as payers were conducted as prayer was conducted as a strictly pvt affair w/o a big crowd!!

Why the same guardians of law go to public places like markets, malls, etc where huge crowds blatantly violate all norms, and take the same action!

Most people including the police dont seem to have understood the real purpose of lock down. It is not a political bundh where people are totally forbidden from coming out. A group of six people in a prayer house can achieve social distancing. But a group of 500 people cannot. So lock down should be on large number of people gathering. I see police beating up people riding scooters. There should be no concern if a person is going in a two wheeler to buy essentials or on some emergency. If more than 4 or 5 people are travelling in a closed car or bus, then the police should intervene.

Wrong on the Priest to have conducted the service with 6 persons around when there is a lockdown. If the Priest had specific permission needs to be checked. Otherwise, he is supposed to conduct the prayer service alone.
