Violence over CAA in Delhi - Sonia Gandhi demands Amit Shah's resignation

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS): The Congress Working Committee met on Thursday and after deliberations for more than two hours, the interim party president Sonia Gandhi demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah should resign following his "colossal failure" in controlling violence in north-east Delhi.

"After reviewing the situation, the CWC is of the firm opinion that what has happened in Delhi is a colossal failure of duty for which the entire responsibility must be borne by the Central government, particularly the Home Minister, and calls upon the Home Minister to tender his resignation immediately"

The Congress said the Delhi Chief Minister is also responsible for the situation.

"The Chief Minister and the Delhi Government are equally responsible for not activating the administration to reach out to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

"It is the collective failure of the two governments that has resulted in a great tragedy in the capital city which threatens to become worse by the day," said the CWC statement read out by Sonia Gandhi.

"The tragic events since last Sunday have a history, design and pattern. It was evident even during the Delhi elections. Several leaders of the BJP made inflammatory statements clearly intended to create an atmosphere of fear and hate. The last of these statements were made on Sunday, when a BJP leader gave an ultimatum of three days to the Delhi Police," said the CWC statement.

The Congress said it is gravely concerned over the unprecedented continuing violence and loss of lives in Delhi, and the deteriorating situation in the national capital.

Sonia Gandhi said that since 2014 no all-party meeting has been called, which is "shocking".

Violence continues unabated on the streets of north-east Delhi.

"The CWC offers its sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and earnestly wishes that the injured persons will recover swiftly and be restored to good health", said the CWC.

The CWC also posed six questions to the central government. The questions that were asked by the CWC were:

1. Where is Amit Shah since last Sunday? What was he doing during the violence?
2. What were the reports given from the day of conclusion of assembly elections in Delhi till date by the intelligence agencies?
3. Was the violence, the result of instigation as said by MoS Home or spontaneous as said by MHA?
4. On the night of Sunday, when there was enough forewarning that the violence will break out, what was strength of police force that was put on action?
5. When the situation was going beyond the control of Delhi police, why additional security forces were not called in?
6. Where is Kejriwal, the CM of Delhi and what he is doing since last Sunday?

In anti-Sikh riots that erupted after the 1984 murder of the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, and killed nearly 3,000 people.
The BJP's party president, Amit Shah, said no one had any doubt on the Congress’ role in the riots. He further said in a tweet, “their leaders and workers went on rampage raising provocative slogans, raping women and murdering men in cold blood. Yet no one was ever punished despite multiple commissions and several eyewitnesses”.
Hailing the verdict Amit Shah thanked Prime Minister Modi “for setting up an SIT in 2015, which initiated re-investigation into several cases of 1984, pending for over three decades.”
Today Delhi is burning and Home Minister Amit Shah words seems to repeating targeting Muslims in particular using the administrative power of Delhi Police. National capital is burning and the delay in filing cases against Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for provocative speeches.

Let's Amit Shah refresh his own comment and take moral responsibility for the failure.

India needs a law that deters rabble-rousers from manufacturing riots in the country. If The conviction of the anti-Sikh rioter may have come after 34 years, then 2002 Gujarat riot victims need justice so that no more Delhi burns in the future.

Sonia - I think you forget that Delhi is under state adminstration. Run in past and also in present by AAP government. Also its not wise for a person like you to even comment anything now as you have been declared as an ACCUSED in three cases in the Supreme Court of India and are out on bail. National herald case, Vadras land matter case also.

Yashwant, first of all before commenting you need to know the fact. Delhi police is not under Delhi Govt but directly comes under central government. Accused is just accused until they are proven guilty. For example Vadra is accused since 2010 by the BJP but still he is accused. I thought there are many ACCUSED BJP ministers and MPs but you have failed to mention their names.

Therefore please do not give excuses for the abject failure of Amit Shah. There is nothing that the Delhi government under Kejriwal can do to stop the violence, as he and his government do not have any means under the law. Do you expect him to hire private mercenaries to maintain law and order?

I have been working in GCC country for the past 13 years. I work in a Arab based company were my colleagues are from different nationalities & different religion & beliefs. Here everyone has the right to their religion & beliefs & never ever Arab Muslims interfere and force them or stop them to their practice. I leave in company accommodation for past several years sharing room with Indian Muslims, Hindus & Christians & sometimes we all cook food together in ONE POT & eat food together, some times separate depending on VEG and NON VEG dish. We respect each other very much & here we leave life like brothers & like ONE family member. Even though lot of issues going on back home India we never had any arguments or distance so far. I don’t understand why not everyone think in this way. WHY ARE WE FIGHTING LIKE ANIMALS & TAKING LIVES OF EACH OTHER & DAMAGING PUBLIC PROPERTY ????
I am a proud Indian Muslim & I love my country & I do not need to certify myself.

Muhammedbhai, Different nationalities live in the middle East nations... They are all labourers, earning daily livelihood... Once their work permit expires , they are all kicked out from those countries... Any form of revolt, protest means instantaneous death !!! In our nation situations are paradoxically opposite, they have freedom, to vote and get elected, as they are citizens of our nation !!! This current bloodbath, mayhem and destruction is to embarrass, weaken our nation, with the assistance of enemies within and beyond our borders..... and a last feeble, desperate attempt, to dethrone our dynamic PM Modiji !!!!!!

Let us be very honest. ...
1.The CAA has been passed in both houses right ? Signed by the Hon.President Right ? Has become an Act by law right ?
What is there to agitate honestly?
Why is there an attempt to give a religious cover to it ??
2.That this Act is not targeting any Community and anyone who is already a,citizen has been made clear by the Government of India.
3Who is behind this agitation ...funding it ?
4.Do all agitators know that almost all countries have their own Citizenship Identity card ?
5.Who is fear mongering and responsible for deaths of innocents on roads?
6.States can only pass Resolutions against CAA but they have no legal validity. This is known by those concerned who still want to make scapegoats of the illiterate.
Trying to get political advantage by creating Anarchy seems to be the only way out for some Frustrated Political Parties and their leaders.

Dear Sir, The BJP came to power exactly for the same reason. To set right all the wrongs of the Congress fir the past 70 plus years. So i dont think we should compare BJP to Congress. What is the BJP doing now ?? And if they are doing the same thing Congress did then whats the use ?? I know it would be waste trying to clarify, but this is the truth isnt it ?? After the emergency by Indira Gandhi, this is the first time there has been stifling freedom of speech. Anyone saying anything against the BJP and the two brothers are branded anti nationals. Forget that, i am surprised why no one is talking about who incited voilence which wasnt there all these days. If we keep arguing, there are a lot of points and it will be endless. BJP came set things right, so let them instead of this dividing and ruling. Let them focus on development.

Mahatma Gandhi's peaceful agitations also hindered the whole of the British empire, but they got us our independence in the end. Don't keep saying that the bills have been passed by parliament. They have been passed because the government has a brute majority. Please also remember that the party in government has only received around 31% of the popular vote. Courts across the world have held the view that all bills passed thus by respective governments cannot be viewed and beneficial to all citizens and can be challenged. The Supreme court has also held that peacefully agitating is ones fundamental right. Since you support the government you may view the agitation as an irritant and hinderance, but there is also a vast majority who do not support the passing of these bills and they find these laws to be undemocratic and an infringement of their rights. Remember we do not live under a dictatorship.
