Mangaluru: Fish famine in Arabian Sea, coastal Karnataka hit hard

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Feb 22: The fish industry of coastal Karnataka is facing a tough time. For the first time in the history of fishing, a terrible fish famine has hit the estern coast. Fishermen are devastated as they do not find fish in the waters of Arabian Sea off the coast of the twin districts.

The availability of fish has gone down considerably in the Arabian Sea due to the rise in global temperature as well as unscientific way of fishing. More than 80% of the boats have anchored on the shore because of this phenomenon.

Generally from January itself the fish catch would be abundant. However, this year the fishermen are not able to get the expected catch. Labourers, mostly from the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh work in the trawl boats of the twin districts. Now they are sitting idle.

More than 30,000 people earn their livelihood through the fish industry. But now all of them are in dire straits, including the Ice plants which supply ice to the boats, labourers who handle the fish after it reaches the port and also fish traders.

Due to unscientific fishing also the fish wealth in sea is depleting. Fishermen are using light fishing method which is banned by the central government. Due to the high voltage of the lights used in this method, the food of fishes is getting burnt and the fishes are dying because of this.

Compared to last year, the fishing industry has lost Rs 756 crore already in this year.

Man's greed and insensitiveness to one another and to even every living thing backfired us with this outcome and we are paying a heavy cost.
But nature has it's own way of giving back when man doesn't respect the cycle of nature of breeding and life cycle in particular.
Why don't we realise the destruction our generation is causing will also cause a direct impact on our children and the future generations to come.
What is happening in the sea is also happen to us with the different kinds of illnesses increasing day by day.
Learn to respect nature and life cycle and gradually everything will fall in place.

This is the end result of greed and nothing else...…………….. The practice of killing the geese which lay the golden legs have led to this situation. The sea is being raped as if there was no tomorrow. Too late to cry isn't it?

I do not feel sorry at all. How is that all those fishermen did not raise any voice towards Chemical seepage,MRPL Waste , other Industrial waste along with underground human waste etc. Did anyone complain about the Car Wash water draining into Palguni and Nethrawathi Rivers. I raised this Issue with MCC Officials along with Environment Official and Health Official. BUt none cared and I gave Up after atleast 25 complaints. Health Officer of MCC drives by Kambla Road where Car Wash water is flowing to Rain Water drain. Official agreed with me that He also seen this but no action taken.
So Butter melts when Heated only. Let Fisher men feel the pinch. They are catching fish to make oil and fertilizer. Let them shut the doors.

Global warming is just an excuse here. Fishing community it to be blamed for this situation. Unhealthy fishing practices, disrespect to nature, lack of discipline for breeding season, greed to export, inflated price in the local market, illegal methods of catching & storing fish etc are key reasons for this situation. Nature has responded accordingly

Its time the entire Eco system is set right

No sympathy on the entire industry . These guys used to catch and destroy the juvenile shrimps in million . Imagine they catching a 3 to 5gm pomfret juvenile and selling it to fish meal (Kutte) factory for 10Rs per kg ? That’s how they destroyed and wiped ocean bed clean . When Govt wanted to implement fishing holiday during breeding season the fisherman wanted to fish . So your catch breeding fish with eggs and then catch the babies too. How will the resource increase ?

I had predicted this few years ago. We used to get here fish like Pomfrets and Kane but only babies 3-4 cms long. I had refused to buy them and told the fish monger they should not import these.
As someone noted below, there are very strict rules in Europe on Fishing. If you catch them small you are caught before you reach the shore and severly fined and fishing license withdrawn.

Have you not read the scriptures? the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”1 Corinthians 3:19
Man thinks he is more clever that's why this is happening

Sad to note that due to increase in global temperature and unscientific method of fishing created fish famine in Arabian Sea and hit coastal Karnataka hard.As a result of which most of the labourours life hit severely and sitting idle without job.The owner of the fishing boats have also incurred heavy loss as compared to last year for the same period. Here nobody can blame Modi government or any other political leaders.Feel very sorry and sympathize with fishermen, their families, children and workers.Only we can pray to the God at this juncture and seek His blessings to restore the previous condition,so that everybody get their livelihood and live happily

juvenile fishing , Fish meal and fish oil industries are the main reason to decline fishes in the  coastal area. Fish mills purchase all kinds of small and big fish which were supposed to be the feed of big / edible fish.

Other countries are smart, their Govt. do not allow this kind of fishing in their area., only we the so called intellectuals do this kind of business and loose our natural resources.

In our coastal area most of the MP & MLA (Congress & BJP) or their relatives are the main partners of this business.
Govt. will not ban this coz most of the fish meal and oil is getting exported through Gujarath or middleman through Gujarati filthy rich Businessman.

Let us become vegetarian... If no vegetables grow in your own compounds... If no compounds start growing them in the bags in which you bring rice and place them in the balcony/terrace... Why to catch fish when they carry eggs? During that season don't venture into the sea... If you fish from all the sides...how fish will multiply?? Even after getting enough fish...sell them with formalin to make it look like fresh and cheat public ... God controls the greed of money of people. ...just see.. What disaster is awaiting in near future god alone knows 😪😪🙏🙏 Still let's fight among us.... among castes.....among creed ....among religion... Let's still try to pull someone who is reaching the top.... Unless until we don't cultivate humanity and love to each other.....world will perish soon.. especially coastal lines .

If fishlings are killed fish population is reduced. What is needed is to reduce human population. It is good to be vegetarian. Many Catholics only eat vegetarian food for Novena/ Monty fest, in Islam vegetarian food is Halal, among Hindus non veg food is considered Tamas guna and is best avoided . Greenhouse gases are produced by growing cattle for food, these gases are the biggest polutants. Before talking about environment and planting trees one has to be a vegetarian,if you really care for environment and pollution.
