Bengaluru: Experts committee recommends continuation of Tipu Sultan in text books

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 10: A committee of experts that was formed to look into the matter of continuing lessons on 'Tiger of Mysore', Tipu Sultan, which are taught in sixth, seventh, and tenth standards now, has recommended in its report to the government to continue with these lessons. The committee is of the opinion that if lessons on Tipu are removed, they effectively severe link that narrates about the role of Mysore state in the fight against the British.

"Tipu Sultan played an important role in southern province in fighting against the British. He fought against the Britishers in four Mysore wars. Therefore, we recommend these lessons to continue," the experts said.

BJP MLA from Madikeri constituency, Appachu Ranjan, had sought removal of the matters pertaining to Tipu in text books as he was characterless religious bigot. He had also said that glorification of such persons by feeding false information to children was improper. Thereafter, the government had formulated this committee.

The report said that nothing new has been added to the text that is already present, and that the matter contained in lessons do not have anything connected with what Ranjan has said. They noted that Tipu has not been projected as an avid supporter of Kannada or patriot, duly adding that only positive things in the form of introduction have been provided.

The report said that if Tipu is seen from negative angle, all the rulers too should be viewed from this angle and personal lives of everyone has one or the other negative issues. Conducting researches into them or looking into other things do not fall under the purview of text books, the committee opined. It also said that it would be not right to inform negative things to the children and distort their minds and the texts should have positive things which develop them. They said that if his matter is removed, history of Mysore from 1783 to 1799 AD cannot be informed, and a void remains in history elating to Mysore.

The committee had Prof Baragur Ramachandrappa, who was the president of text book committee, subject experts, Prof Ashwath Narayan, who had authored the history text book for tenth standard, Prof Rajesh, who had prepared seventh standard text book, and Prof T R Chandrashekhar, who had created the sixth standard text book.

    ― Neil Gaiman,

Nevertheless, we should know that there are some exceptional people whose actions do match their inside form.
As to Tipu Slultan I never, ever realized that in reality he is different than what he is portrayed.

Here are some of the points to consider, and let people decide who is their Hero or who is Zero.

    1. The work of the Historians is to give a detailed account of both the good and the bad that these leaders had done.

    2. There should also be accounts of all Historians of different faiths that should be taken into account

    3. All of these actual facts should be taught, not what was hoped, presumed or assumed.

Tipu fought with the British it is because it was more for his own survival. He not only fought the British, he fought the Nizam of Hyderabad, The Marathas, the Kings of Travancore and he persecuted large parts of his non Muslim population. Tipu joined hads with the French, and he tried to create a Grand alliance bewteen the King of Afghanistan, The Caliphate in Turkey and biring them all together to invade India and take over the country and then divide the spoils. Is that a FREEdom fighter?

The British defeated the Moghuls, and were ruling by making treaties with the many Kings and Queens accross India. So once Tipu defeated the British, then the whole of India would come under his control. What sort of Freedom fighter is this to kick out the British, he formed alliances with foreign powers. If he was a real freedom fighter, then he would have formed allicances with local Indians kings, instead he fought with each and every one of them.

Thank God, at least the committee was not spineless, unlike the elected representatives. BJP condemns Tipu - what the present central Govt is doing with the proposed CAB and NRC is nothing short of what he is accused of having done.

Well done. BJP MLA Appachu Ranjan is a communal guy who is trying to bow the seed of hatred between communities.

He has no right continue in poitics due to his bad intention and bjp should sack him immediately. People like him are burden to our society. They should be kicked out from indian main land as they cannot mingle with people of different religions and are threatening for unity.

History must provide a balanced view, the good with the bad; if the bad predominates, then there is no place for it. Tippu with all his atrocities can still be regarded as an opponent of British in a tiny part of India and for that reason deserves a footnote, not an entire lesson.

If Mughal can be celebrated why not British . Both played Demons and Gods for Indian public . Keeping in mind the contribution of Moghuls on governance contribution of British on modern India cannot be ignored .

Be it Indian railways , Irrigation ( today Rice we eat from Andhra Pradesh is direct contribution of British on irrigation ) as well as farming and plantations, unifying the nation what is called as India and also Indian constitution which is framed with the guidelines of British laws.

Above all we have to praise the Indians because , despite all the crimes committed on our ancestors by these invaders our people took only the positive ones and tried to destroy the negative deeds and still continued to keep our local culture striving. It was not in the case of most of British and Mughal ruled land .
