Udupi, Dec 10: Workshop on reuse of plastics for the construction of roads was organized by Udupi District Panchayat and Panchayat Raj for the engineers at Udupi District Panchayat Hall on December 10.

“Plastic has become a part of our daily life in one or the other way. Leading a day without using plastic is very hard. At the same time we need to avoid the problems being caused due to plastics. Instead of treating plastic as a waste, we must make use of it in a way so that it becomes a resource,” said Padmashri awardee Dr R Vasudevan.

Udupi district panchayat and Panchayat Raj engineers’ department organized training programme for engineers to build roads by using plastic.

Addressing the people in this occasion, Dr R Vasudevan said, “Plastic must be used properly instead of banning it. Plastic items must be re-used. One time used plastics can be used for building tar roads at very less price. Around 100 lac tons of plastic is needed to build tar road out of plastic. But only 10 lac tons of plastic are available now. By using one lac tons of plastic, one km road can be built. Already one lac kilometer of plastic tar road have been built in 11 states. Pot holes issues do not arise when tar roads are built by plastic. In Mumbai roads are built by using plastics and as a result even during the heavy rains, roads were not damaged. Plastic waste can be used to construct buildings. It is proven scientifically that reusing plastic does not affect the environment.

District Panchayat president Dinakar Babu inaugurated the workshop and said, “Udupi district tops in everything but lags in re usage of plastic. Engineers must make use of this workshop and implement them in practice while building roads out of plastic.”

G Jagadeesh, District Commissioner of Udupi said, “In many states plastics are reused. Many environmental problems can be avoided by reusing plastics. This is a continuous process. Engineers must not stop this as in SR rates plastic prices are not mentioned.”

Sheela K Shetty, district panchayat vice-president, Preeti Gehlott, CEO district panchayat, district panchayat vice-secreatry Kiran Padnekar and Dr Ramalinga Chandrashekhar, assistant professor from Madhurai Tyagaraj College were present.

Srnivas Rao compered the programme and PDO Mahesh rendered vote of thanks.
