Mangaluru, Nov 17: The chief district and sessions court here, which conducted hearing into the murder of Daniel Fernandes (56) from Barebail near Yeyyadi in the city, found that the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder levelled against the accused was proved against the accused. Accordingly, the judge sentenced Jagadish Shetty (49) from Barebail to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

Judge of the court, Kadlur Satyanarayana Acharya, who conducted the hearing, also imposed fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused. If he fails to pay fine, Shetty will have to undergo a year's additional simple imprisonment, he ruled. He also said that the wife of the deceased Daniel would be eligible to claim compensation from the district legal services authority.

On September 20, 2018, a fight had broken out between Jagadish Shetty and Daniel, at the end of which Jagadish had reportedly dropped boulder on Daniel. Daniel, who suffered critical injuries, had been admitted into a hospital where he breathed his last on September 23.

Raju Poojary Bannadi, public prosecutor, had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.

7 years and Rs.10,000 is that all the value of life of a person? Shouldn't the fine be raised further and imprisonment be more longer?

only seven years for murdering someone? Somebody who might have been a breadwinner lost his life. How can the culprit get away with only 7 years. And 10000 fine for what?

    Raju, Karkala,
Shame on you to have replied "Correct. More than enough".. Do you have a family !!! Do you know the gravity of the circumstance ! Do you know what's like loosing a bread winner in a family..! Hope to see mature comments.. Victims family reads it too.
Case to be appealed and rigorous imprisonment to be imposed.. Victims family be compensated adequately.. If Daniel had committed this I would have said the same thing. Every life counts, it's very precious.
