Bicholim, Nov 16: For over a week the Sakhali Municipal Council (SMC) has been conducting raids on shopkeepers and vendors selling plastic carry bags. Once found guilty, SMC is imposing fines on defaulters.

Earlier in the year, SMC announced October 2 as the deadline to stop the usage of plastic bags. “Action was initiated against the errant shopkeepers and vendors after some villagers brought the matter to the council's notice," SMC chief, Pravinjay Pandit said.

Pandit said the anti-plastic drive was launched three months after creating awareness amongst the shopkeepers.
