Mangaluru: Lourdes Central School hosts spectacular Annual Sports Day

Mangaluru, Nov 8: Lourdes Central School organised Annual Sports Day on November 8 for classes VI to XII at Mangala Stadium, M G Road, here.

Pushparaj Hegde P - Assistant manager, Syndicate Bank, national level weightlifter, Ekalavya awardee, the president of the function, Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza, manager, Lourdes Central School, principal, Fr Robert D’Souza, vice-principal, Belita Mascarenhas, assistant parish priests, Fr Vinod Lobo and Fr Pramod Crasta and secretary of Bejai Parish Pastoral Parishad, Cony Saldanha, Valentina Rodrigues joint secretary, PTEC and Adelaide D’Sa were present.


The inaugural programme began with the invocation of God’s blessings sung by the school choir under the guidance of Ivan Mascarenhas.

This was followed by the school parade headed by the head boy, Danish Pinto, the head girl, Parvathy Menon, deputy head boy, Rion Valdar, the deputy head girl, Heba Bashir, the sports minister, Lavanya Rao, the house captains and vice-captains with their respective houses.

It was indeed a treat to watch the students brimming with enthusiasm, march to the beat of the band. The school flag was ceremonially carried by the worthy sportsmen of the school who are members of the football team – Joel Lobo, Rueben Mascrenhas, Pavan Kumar and Anush Revankar for the flag raising ceremony. Pushparaj Hegde P hoisted the flag.

The torch was borne by the athletes who have emerged winners in various events – Niranjan Rajeev, international level skater, girls basketball team – Sunidhi Hegde,
Riya Das, Maria Samiksha, Sneha Lobo, Shloka Rai, Prajna K P, Shreya Arbi, a national level athletic champion. The chief guest received the torch and declared the sports meet open.

The sports minister, Lavanya Rao, led the oath and recited the pledge. The students gave an impressive show of harmony and discipline through the mass drill. On this joyous occasion, the principal, Fr Robert D’Souza gave the welcome address and introduced the guest. The arrival of the sports torch and the flame symbolises and kindles the spirit of sportsmanship.

Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza received the torch and declared the sports meet open. The sports minister Lavanya Rao, led the oath and recited the pledge. The students gave an impressive show of harmony and discipline through the mass drill. The Sports Day witnessed a spectacular display of energy and rhythm through an aerobic dance by class VI.

Pushparaj P addressed the gathering and said, “The rules we follow to win in sports should help us to lead a better future. One should never use shortcuts to win. Everyday spend a half an hour in sports activities to have a beautiful future. Do not compromise on discipline."

Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza in his message expressed that education is not only from books, but it is all round development of body, mind and soul. Since every individual is unique, he advised that we should compete with ourselves.

Vishwanath Devadiga, the PT instructor expressed his gratitude and proposed the vote of thanks.

The house system song was sung with vigour and gusto.

The valedictory ceremony commenced at 3.00 pm.

Gowri Ravi welcomed the gathering. Fr Robert D’Souza, Belita Mascarenhas and Valentina Rodrigues felicitated the winners of the relay and individual champions.

Individual Champions are as follows:

Class VI girls’ category: Vanshika – Amber House
Class VI boys’ category: Faraj F Fareed – Coral House
Class VII and VIII girls’ category: Shreya Arbi – Amber House
Class VII and VIII boys’ category: Samarth Manipur – Coral House and Aiden Rodrigues – Amber House
Class IX and X girls’ category: Shravya R – Amber House
Class IX and X boys’ category: Ninaad Lobo – Opal House
Class XI and XII girls’ category: Ekta Chittaranjan – Amber House
Class XI and XII boys’ category: Ankush Shetty – Jade House

The principal awarded the Rolling Shield to Amber House and the Runners Up Shield to Opal House.

The convenor of the Annual Sports Day, Veerendra Alva proposed the vote of thanks.

The lowering of the school flag which marks the end of the closing ceremony was done ceremoniously in the presence of the principal. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.

Gowri Ravi and Mini Kumari compered the inaugural programme. Vishwanath Devadiga and Veerendra Alva were the convenors of the Annual Sports Day.
