New political kid on the block: J&K's 'nationalist' party

Srinagar, Sep 22 (IANS): A new political outfit is born in Kashmir which is nationalist in it's approach. The news of the formation of Jammu and Kashmir Political Movement (Independent) was broken in a press conference in Srinagar on September 9 by people who do not belong to the established political leadership in the state.

Advocating for a "new start" for Kashmir, the party invited "people from all walks of life". The party leadership, however, wasn't present at the press meet. It was one of the rarest of rare occasions when a political party was allowed to hold a press briefing post August 6, when the Indian government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Kashmir.

This political outfit, unlike other mainstream Kashmir-based political parties like the People's Democratic Front (PDP) or the National Conference (NC), harbours 'nationalist' views. The 49-year-old President of the party Peerzada Syeed, in an interview to a media outlet, has said, "We believe our future lies with India".

Peerzada, a former member of the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference had quit the party in 2002 after being denied a party ticket in the state assembly elections.

Peerzada accepted in the said interview that he was in touch with a high profile Delhi based politician, who he refused to name him.

At present, the party has 10-15 office bearers including doctors, lawyers and intellectuals. The new outfit also claims to have 25,000 workers.

The party comes into being at a time when there's a political vacuum in the valley. Most of the political class including former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah are either under arrest or detention.

Jammu and Kashmir Political Movement (Independent) makes it clear that they want to fight elections and take advantage of the political vacuum in the Valley.

The party is hopeful that a better future will emerge out of the abrogation of Article 370. But, it demands domicile rights in Jammu and Kashmir on the lines of Himachal Pradesh.
