Mangaluru: Stringent traffic fines - Drivers to drop home if you are drunk!

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 16: A team of youngsters from the city has prepared itself to help people who get drunk and find it difficult to drive their cars, thereby exposing themselves to the risk of getting heavily fined. This team is ready to pick such people and drop them off at their houses for a fee.

Drunk driving attracts fine of Rs 10,000. The police personnel of the city of late have been keeping a tight vigil on drunk driving. People who are habituated to driving home after consuming alcohol either because of habit or compulsion of their jobs, are now facing a dilemma. The team wants to serve such people and also earn something. It has started to offer services from September 14 onwards.

People in need of assistance after consuming liquor can call the mobile phone number of the members of this team. Two members of the team will arrive at the spot with their vehicle and offer to drop the callers to their destinations. If the concerned want to be dropped off in their own vehicles, the team is ready for that service too. If the drunk person has to be dropped off at his home, another member of the team will follow in either a motor bike or car to pick the member of the team at the point of drop.

One of the members of the team, Ramanath Prabu Marakada, a cab driver by profession, said that he was offering such services even in the past to doctors and others during late night hours. He said that the drop facility has now been extended for others who may face trouble because of the revised provisions of Motor Vehicles Act.

The team will be offering services between 7 pm to 1 am. It proposes to charge Rs 500 per trip within the city. Members of the team are Ramanath Prabhu Marakada, Rayan Pinto Bajpe, Deekshit Bajpe, Srinath Konchady, Sharan Marakada and Santosh Marakada.

They have copied one of the same service named "Get Drunk Get Dropped" which is been highlighted everywhere in Mangalore city. And its really famous every where and i know the team leader personally. His name is "Adnan" and they have also been published in times of India. This is not a sort of marketing as such here but if you all can check with famous clubs and lounges bars in mangalore they will consider him only.

Many ask how the drunken drivers can call those numbers before he drunk or after he drunk. Well, there will always be people to help to dial the numbers for you, if you are so drunk.

Drinking and driving is not always a problem everywhere or every time. It is the excess. Bar owners are penalized in some countries and they face civil, even penal liability if they serve liquor to a person apparently in an inebriated state. If a bar owner knows a person is drunk after consuming liquor in his/her tavern, they should be compelled to give a ride to the nearest bus stop or terminal (if they are out-of-towners) or to their home and charge them for the service.
Failing all that the new initiative is good provided safety and security issues are addressed for which these people should be licensed and have additional insurance.
In Canada there is what's called MADD - Mothers against Drunk Driving - which helps youth drunk after partying to reach their home safely. It is an NGO.

Many people take limited drinks and then drive, still they drive safely. It doesn't mean that they are not in control and cause accidents. Most of the people, regardless of cast, creed, rich or poor wants to drink after tiresome day and hard work for relaxing. The law should have been bit relaxed that, if anyone cause accident being drunk, then the driver should be fined heavily/punished by law. Otherwise, the current situation is paving the way for many untoward things like...
Traffic police stop motorists and demand bribe - paving the way for corruption!!!
Hoteliers/ Bars lose business - they are helpless.
People who don't want to drink at home, have to cultivate this habit of drinking at home. (may be, they can drink more and all the time being at home) - paving the way for family quarrels!!!
All laws are made to bring changes and improvement in the society. However, they must consider the merits and demerits post implementation. Keeping the fingers crossed for next change????

    David, what a logic ?
Some times it is right that all the heavy truck or bus drivers on a long distance and ghat section they consume liquor and drive safely to the destination. The problem in the cities where the heavy traffic over congested narrow streets and some guys (drunken) and speed up. Many areas in Mangalore are nothing but jammed with pedestrian movement and vehicles from all around. In such circumstances police need to apply stringent punishment. It is better to eat Beef, pork or Pizza, KFC sitting home and enjoy your drinks. I enjoyed good rains with all the best of food.

As per court there is no link between drunk and drive accident deaths than normal accident deaths, insurence companies failed to give proofs to court, so drunk and drive is not directly linked to accident.

I have been to Mangalore recently and many known people have informed me as to the heavy fines if caught drunken state and if caught repeated times, possibility of confiscating the vehicle/suspending driving license etc. After any late social gathering, partying, or get together they arrange for Uber/Ola taxi service or auto rickshaws to reach home safely.
Save ones own life and also others from the dangers of drunken accidents.

My hard work gets less money value.
Myself getting less work due to no work nor no jobs and costly Beef, Chicken, sheep meat and pork.
I am drinking because my life gets costlier and no value. (Actually I am not Alcoholic)

    @ Elwyn Goveas,
Why not both? Instead of drink and drive, they can drive and drink. That is carry a parcel, drive home first and then drink.
