Panaji, Sep 6: Disgraced swimming coach Surajit Ganguly, who has been accused of raping a 15-year-old swimmer in Goa, was caught at New Delhi on Friday, while he was on the run, a senior police official said.

Superintendent of Police (North) Utkrisht Prasoon said that the accused who was on the run and travelling through different states was apprehended in New Delhi’s Kashmere gate area on Friday.

Goa police had sent teams to different locations to nab the accused, who has been absconding since the case of rape, molestation, threatening and trespass was filed by the minor’s father.

Prasoon said that the father of the girl had approached Rishra Police Station in Hoogly district of West Bengal with the complaint against the  swimming coach.

In the complaint, it is mentioned that the incident happened at Mapusa in Goa. “After the complaint, North Goa District Police immediately sprung into action and Hoogly Police Station was contacted regarding the matter,” the SP said.

The complaint, obtained from West Bengal via e-mail and FIR, was immediately registered in the matter. In order to nab the accused, a team was constituted under North Goa SP Utkrisht Prasoon and SDPO Mapusa Gajanand Prabhudessai.

Prasoon said that the accused was traced with the help of technical surveillance and local intelligence. “It was found that the accused was travelling to different cities in order to evade arrest,” he added.

The accused has been booked for rape under section 506 of Indian Penal Code, Section 4 of POCSO and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act.
