Mangaluru: Classes to offset rain holidays begin in twin districts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 24: The department of public instruction of the district had granted holidays to schools and colleges from August 5 to 12 in view of prediction of heavy rainfall. To compensate for the loss of classes, the department has planned to hold classes in the afternoon sessions on Saturdays, beginning from today.

Schools in Beltangady, Sullia and Puttur blocks were given holiday from August 5 to 12 while the other blocks got holiday from August 6 to 12. The department had decided to make good the loss of classes by holding additional classes on Saturday or Sunday. As there was widespread opposition for the proposal to hold classes on Sunday, the department has decided to conduct additional classes on Saturdays alone.

For schools in Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal, Moodbidri and Beltangady blocks, classes will be held for 13 Saturdays beginning from August 24 and ending with December 7. For schools under the city (north) and south blocks, 12 additional classes till November 30 will be conducted, said Dakshina Kannada district deputy director of public instruction, Y Shivaramayya. In Udupi district, classes will be held on ten consecutive Saturdays, said Udupi deputy director of public instruction, Sheshashayana K.

PU classes too

The department of PU education is considering the proposal to hold compensatory classes even for PU students on Saturday afternoon sessions. Deputy director of the department in Dakshina Kannada district, Vasudeva Kamath, and his Udupi counterpart, Subrahmanya Joshi, said that the dates would be revealed once the circular in this regard is issued by the department at state level.

Holiday granted on 12th August - a Sunday !? Can the Department of public instruction re-check their statements and also if all schools were actually closed. You can't issue a closure notice in the middle of the day and call it a retrospective holiday .

As another commentator previously mentioned, the extra classes on Saturday appears to be a sort of disciplinary action against teachers so that they work full hours for their (meager) salaries.

Good decision taken by the administration. Childrens enjoyed much having continuous holiday holed-up much at home due to rain. Let them now attend classes which prescribed by the authorites. Let parents encourage childrens to attend the same and give teachers space to cover all lessons which lost earlier.
