Cotton champions at Day 2 of LFW 2019


Mumbai, Aug 22 (IANS) The first show on the second day of the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2019, dedicated to sustainability, opened with an interaction with two organic cotton farmers from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh who spoke about the importance of producing and consuming organic cotton.

A 32-year-old farmer who has been doing organic cotton farming from the last few years feels that organic cotton is the top level of fabrics and that it should be supported by stakeholders to popularise it across the globe.

He said that because of the lack of awareness, the production of organic cotton cannot thrive. He urged the people to adopt the fabric in their lifestyle that can help the farmers thrive and keep the environment safe.

The show called Cotton Champions: Farmers by C&A Foundation with 11.11/eleven eleven; a Pret label by designers Shani Himanshu and Mia Morikawa, saw garments in straight, geometrical silhouettes rendered in hand-woven and hand spun organic cotton and kala cotton.

The collection included baggy pants, slim dresses, jumpsuits, short dungarees, skirts, pants and joggers that were fluid and easy flowing flow.

To accessorise the look, the models wore dyed scarves, branded cotton tapes worn as belts, tie-ups and inside finishing, completed the look. The designers have used traditional techniques like bandhani, mud resist prints, kalamkari as well as hand painting and Shibori to give the collection a pret look.

The men's wear saw kurta, shorts, hoodies, joggers and denim pants.

Staying true to the theme of the day, the designers also used natural dyes like pomegranate shells, ferrous, tamarind seeds, charcoal to give earthy colours like indigo, yellow, smoke and light blue to their outfits.
