M'luru: Quality Management Systems, Internal Audit in Medical Laboratories workshop held at FMMCH

Mangaluru, Aug 21: The department of Pathology, Father Muller Medical College in association with Medical Education and Learning Point, Delhi will organise a four day workshop on Quality Management Systems and Internal Audit in Medical Laboratories as per ISO 15189:2012 from August 21 to 24 at Father Muller Charitable Institutions campus.

The inaugural programme was held on August 21 with delegates (doctors involved in hospital laboratories) gathered from far and wide to equip themselves with the latest quality adherence in laboratory care and reporting. The administrator of Father Muller Medical College, Fr Ajith Menezes inaugurated the conclave in presence of Dr J P Alva, dean FMMC, Dr Dileep and Dr Rohini Kalhan, MELAP, Delhi. Fr Ajith Menezes reflected on the quote of Mahatma Gandhi ji 'be the change you want to see in the world', saying that knowledge needed to be enhanced to overcome a limitation. He wished the conclave a great learning experience.



SO 15189:2012 is a standard that provides specific requirements for quality and competence that are particular to medical laboratories. The standard promotes global harmonization of medical practices. It protects health and safety of patients and healthcare providers, supports efficient exchange of information and protection of data in addition to overall improvement in quality of care.

ISO:15189 is used by laboratory customers, regulatory authorities and accreditation bodies to ensure competence. Internal auditing is fundamental to any quality improvement initiative. A fundamental element of all Quality Management System standards is the measurement of system and process performance using a process based approach. The method for determining this is to conduct internal audits. The standard requires that the trained auditors carry out these audits. This four day course focuses on auditing for real quality improvement as well as compliance.

The course provides detailed training in developing the skills necessary to be an effective internal auditor using many exercises and in creating awareness of internationally accepted quality norms and procedures as per standard 15189, which is followed and accepted across the world.

This programme is accredited by NABET (Quality Council of India) body formed by Govt of India and three premier industry associations CII, FICCI and ASSOCHAM to establish and operate national accreditation structure and promote quality.

Dr Hilda Fernandes, laboratory director, FMMCH, welcomed the dignitaries and delegates and Dr Crysle Saldanha, asst prof, dept of Pathology and organising secretary of the conclave, delivered the vote of thanks.

Father Muller Medical College and Hospital is the first hospital in the RGUHS to be accredited with NABL moreover, also being reaccredited for NABH.
