Sullia, Jul 22: A hillock suffered landslide and a huge mound of mud got deposited on an under-construction house at Jodupala on Sunday July 21. The incident brought back memories of extensive loss of property and lives inflicted by heavy rain at Jodupala and surrounding areas during August last in which the road between Mysuru and Mangaluru was rendered unmotorable.

The house of Veerendra, which was damaged, was inspected by officials. The locals are worried as this incident has happened even before heavy rains as predicted have visited the area.

It may be recalled that after the landslides at Jodupala, Monnangeri, Arekkal etc, geologists and director of National Disaster Relief Centre had visited and warned that such landslides might happen repeatedly.

Sampaje, Kadamakal and other rural areas on the border of Dakshina Kannada district with Kodagu received heavy downpour on Saturday. Water level in River Cauvery at Bhagamandala rose as a result. In a few places earthen compounds crashed. In one such incidents, compound walls of two houses were damaged after a protective wall came crashing down. The loss in this incident has been estimated at three lac rupees.

A compound wall near Madikeri bus stand also crashed. Sea erosion has worsened at Uchila Battappady, Malpe Kodybendre etc. In these areas, because of the churning of sea water sediment from the bottom has got mixed and seawater has turned black.
