Mangaluru: National seminar on banking held at SAC

Mangaluru, Jul 20: The department of Economics, St Aloysius College (autonomous), organised a day-long national level seminar on ‘Banking before and after Nationalisation’ on Friday July 19 at LCRI Hall to commemorate the 50th year of Bank Nationalisaton. Allen C A Pereira, former chairman and managing director, Bank of Maharashtra and former director National Institute of Bank Management inaugurated the workshop in a unique manner by dropping a coin into the piggy bank and delivered the keynote address. Fr Dr Praveen Martis SJ, principal, presided over the seminar.

Allen C A Pereira, in his keynote address shared his experiences as a banker. He said that he was a barefoot banker than being a sophisticated banker. He further said, “Bank nationalization took banking to the masses. During the first decade of nationalization of banks, the growth rate diminished due to several cases of insolvency and bankruptcy. There is tremendous scope for the growth of Indian economy as one of the fastest growing economies. In business or banking, ethics and good governance are the most important factors. Unethical practices have become instrumental for most of the challenges faced by the nationalised banks.” He urged the students to choose banking career and do miracles in future banking.



Fr Dr Praveen Martis in his address congratulated the organisers for organizing such a relevant seminar. He said that a lot of experiments have taken place in banking sector and students can get ample career opportunities in banking. He further said that the budding talents have a bright future in the field of banking for showcasing their talents as economists or bankers.

Dr G V Joshi, renowned economist, Dr T Mallikarjunappa, professor, department of MBA and dean faculty of Commerce, Mangalore University and T R Bhat, former director, Corporation Bank and social activist were the resource persons. They spoke on ‘Nationalised Banks as Catalysts of Change’, ‘The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, The Corporate Sector and The Role of Banks in India’, and ‘The Nationalized Banks: Challenges Ahead’ respectively.

Nicole Serrao compered the programme. Shwetha Arehole staged a welcome dance. Dr Norbert Lobo welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest. Dr Priya Shetty rendered the vote of thanks.
