Vote for Patkura Assembly seat in Odisha on July 20


Bhubaneswar, Jul 18 (IANS): Leaders of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are making serious efforts to reach out to voters in the Patkura Assembly constituency, elections to which was postponed due to death of a candidate.

It will go to polls on Saturday and the campaigning will end on Thursday. Voting in the seat in the Kendrapara district of Odisha was scheduled on April 29.

While BJD chief Naveen Patnaik campaigned for party candidate Sabitri Agarwalla on Wednesday, several ministers, party MLAs and MPs are camping in the constituency.

From the BJP side, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi, and other senior BJP leaders have campaigned for party candidate Bijoy Mohapatra.

For Congress candidate Jayanta Mohanty, state party unit chief Niranjan Patnaik and senior leader Narasingha Mishra have campaigned in the area.

Of the 10 candidates, one is woman and there are 2.44 lakh eligible voters in the constituency.

Around 1,700 polling personnel had been deployed to conduct the election, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar on Thursday.

As per the Election Commission directions, indelible ink would be applied on the voters' middle finger of the left hand, said Kumar. In case of re-polling at any booth, the ink would be applied on the ring finger, he said.

The voting was later postponed for 60 days due to cyclone Fani that hit the state on May 3.
