Mangaluru, Jul 17: An assistant jailer of the district prison here has been imposed with the punishment of withholding of annual increment. An order in this regard was issued by the superintendent of the central prison, as punishment for releasing two murder-accused on bail, after misconstruing notices served on the two inmates of the prison as bail orders.

The district prison here functions under the central prison at Shivamogga. Therefore, superintendent of the prison there had sought a report on the above incident. Based on the report, the punishment as above was awarded. The jailer and superintendent had signed the release order of the two persons on bail without properly verifying the court notice.

But the two other officials involved with the mistake have been spared of punishment, as they are serving probationary period. The assistant jailer, who was promoted as chief warden two months back, however could not escape from punishment.
