Mumbai, Jul 7: On a Saturday afternoon, a 22-year-old man tried to save a kid who was swept by the sea from Marine Drive. Unfortunately, the violent waves and strong current, coupled with a high tide at 4.74 metres at 2:52 pm proved disastrous.

One of the bystanders, Shyam Sharma, in his statement to the police stated that he saw the 12-year-old fall into the sea, followed by Javed Shaikh, the rescuer, jumping immediately to save him. According to Shaikh’s family, Javed was a good swimmer and served as a volunteer in unfortunate events as these.

Javed was unsuccessful in rescuing the child and his body was pulled out by the rescue operators. He was rushed to GT hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Javed was a resident of a slum in Cuffe Parade.

Over the fate of the 12-year-old Sahil Khan, DCP Abhishek Trimukhe said, “Sahil was lying on the parapet facing the sea and his friends were facing the road. The high tide waves came and pulled the boy in, but threw his friends on the Bandstand Promenade.”

Search for the kid is still on, initially the officials were unsure of a casualty, but the father of the 12-year-old approached the Police stating that his son was missing. As of Saturday since the sea around the Promenade area was rough the officials have kept the area out of bounds for the public.
