Koppal: Husband's drinking forces woman to drown three children and kill self

Daijiworld Media Network - Koppal (SHP)

Koppal, Jun 19: A 30-year-old woman committed suicide after drowning her three children. The woman seemed to have reached her limits of tolerance when she finally decided to end her life and also that of her kids.

The woman has been identified as Yallamma Barker, who hails from the Yere Hanchinal village in Kuknoor taluk of Koppal district. Late on Monday, June 17, Yallamma killed her three kids by drowning them. The kids have been identified as Akshata (7), Kavya (4), Nagraj (2).

Over a long period of time, the husband of the deceased used to show up at home drunk almost every day. His drunkenness used to lead to arguments and scuffle. The constant drinking and the fights mentally disturbed Yallamma, who then ended up taking this drastic step.

A police official said that Yallamma killed her eldest daughter by repeatedly knocking her head in a bucketful of water. The second daughter was killed in a second water drum, the youngest child, her son, was killed by drowning in a water tank.

The incident occurred while the husband was still out sleeping. Once Yallamma killed all of her kids, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan.

Soon after, the police reached the scene of the crime and conducted an inquiry. Yallamma’s husband Umesh has been absconding. Police are on a manhunt for his arrest.

Central and state govts have enough laws and women organizations to deal with such cases. My younger daughter, a teacher in Mumbai once told me they are lethargic, unhelpful and are only interested in politics.

No body help my dear brother. Not even family and friends. They share with nighbours and friends and it returns to husband and the problem grows and become critical. It will become story to enjoy for all.

So I feel bad for such people. There are hundreds of family in each area especially people who are poor. Maximum money earned goes to alchohol . People sell things from the house if they have no money for alchohol.

No intellectual and no rationalist ever raised their voice on eradication of drinking alcohol so far and they are conveniently silent on this social evil. For those so called forward thinkers and rationalists, only religious practices followed by part of society is not acceptable.

In that case we should ban it for 5 years and educate the people first.
As far as I know my country we like breaking the rules and go against law in every possible way.
India is not ready yet to handle the liquor well like in other developed countries.

Liquor will only take this already limping country backwards.

Easy to say that Jossey. How could she take care of her 3 kids after walking out if her home? Things would have gotten worse. Having reached a dead end she took this drastic step. I'm not advocating suicide as a solution though.
