India raises duty on US exports as retaliatory action

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): Hitting back at the Trump administration for withdrawing trade privileges for certain Indian goods, the Indian government on Saturday raised custom duty on various items, including walnut and apples, exported from the US.

In a late evening notification, the Union Finance Ministry said that the decision was taken in public interest.

The higher custom duty would be applicable from June 16.

In response to the US refusal to exempt Indian steel and aluminimum from higher tariffs, India had last year announced to slam import duty as high as 120 per cent on over dozen items. It, however, deferred the decision in the wake of ongoing trade talks in the hope that the trade issues will be resolved bilaterally.

But India has finally retaliated to the US move, prompted by withdrwal of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) benefits a few weeks back.

Industry estimates have pegged the additional burden on US items exported to India at $290 million.

Last year, India's trade surplus for merchandise goods with the US was almost $18-19 billion.

India's firm action against US has come days before Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is to meet his American counterpart Mike Pompeo.

This is linked to India not cutting off its Oil purchase from Iran. Indirectly India is getting sanctioned for not listening to Big Brother. If India had a robust economy that is dependent on its internal consumers rather than exports, it could have Said bye bye to Big brother. But unfortunately India, like China is making policies towards an export driven economy which will crash every time big brother sneezes.

America makes worlds best fighter jets, Naval Ships, war equipments including superior guns and India should import them to fight Pakistan & China.

America dependent on Indian skilled labor including Doctors & Engineers and should stop sending our skilled laborers to USA and to other developed Nations.

All most all Indian exporters do not return profits from export to India. All profits are invested in New York stock exchange So India should stop issuing passports to Exporters and Students to stop export of Indian Black money and brain drain. Jai Hind.

NRIs in the US do not repatriate their savings to India (unlike those in Gulf) because income in India is taxed there too.

your statement of not sending doctors and enigneers to US is really funny.
Do you seriously think that US is asking us to send or our people are making a beeline to go to gulf, US, Europe, australia, Canad and even Israel!
Let us be honest. Every educated Indian wants to go to greener pastures and counties where the living standards and social unity is extremely high.
I myself have lived in Dubai for 20 years and as they do not give citizenship I came back to India. I know what hell and heaven difference is there in both countries.

But let us forget everything and chant Modi Modi Modi

Mr Shankar rightly said that one has to come out of the well. India is the 9th largest trading partner with the US and the exports were USD 33,502.80 million during the calendar year 2018. Exports from Jan to Apr 2019 were USD 12,013.30 million.
USA has initiated express entry channel for granting H-1B to qualified Indians and issue of green card to Indians has increased by 18.30%.
Incidentally, India's export of buffalo meat (beef meaning strictly buffalo meat) is miniscule.

USD 33,502.80 million per year is very small number for country like USA & will not make any difference in not importing sub standard items from India.

India's exports to the US in 2017-18 stood at USD 47.9 billion, while imports were at USD 26.7 billion. The trade balance is in favour of India. ( USD 47.9 billion minus USD26.7 billion equuals USD 21.2 billion) To bridge the gap India should import additional USD 21.2 billion or USA should raise duty equal to USD 21.2 billion.

What do you mean US hardly buys anything except beef? What about steel, aluminium and other minerals? Here the controversy is due to imposition of higher tariffs by US on India's main exports.
