2 killed as major fire breaks out in south Mumbai

Mumbai, May 24: A major fire broke out late night in a residential building at Bhendi Bazaar in south Mumbai on Thursday, killing two persons, police and firefighters said. The fire started in a house on the third floor of Punjab Mahal building at Bhendi Bazaar.

“According to fire brigade officials, 13 people suffered injuries in the incident of which two could not survive,” as per TOI reporter’s tweet.

"The fire has been brought under control and 12 persons have been rescued so far. A fire audit will be done to ascertain the reason behind the fire," said Praveen Parsdeshi, BMC commissioner. The injured were taken to JJ hospital in a private ambulance.

Search for any other trapped person is in progress.

Punjab Mahal is just a lane away from Hussaini Building which collapsed two years ago in which several people lost their lives. Both these buildings come under the SBUT Bhendi Bazaar cluster redevelopment project.
