Mangaluru: Srinivas Institute of Technology observes Earth Day

Mangaluru, Apr 24: World Earth Day was celebrated by the department of Mechanical Engineering of Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, here on April 22.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Shree Padre, editor of Adike Patrike spoke on the importance of water conservation. He explained about draught faced by Karnataka comparing it with other states where rainfall is less than Karnataka. He insisted on awareness creation of rainwater harvesting and to overcome draught by good planning, technology transformation and people's participation. "It is our prime duty to preserve water, soil and forest. Draught can be overcome in two years by well planned mass effort for which the role of the educational institution is very essential."



Dr Thomas Pinto, professor, department of Mechanical Engineering presided over the function. He said, "World Earth Day has been celebrated in more than 193 countries since 1970. The theme of this year is 'Protect Our Species'. Nature has enough resources to fulfill the need of humanbeings but man's greed is destroying it. Unless we conserve the resources and environment, the next generation will be deprived of clean air, water and environment. I suggest that engineers take the lead in increasing awareness and research in this reagard."

Dr Srinivasa Mayya, principal, SIT conveyed his well wishes. Dr Shankar K S and convener Prof Lokesh V were present and also spoke.

The programme was welcomed by Prithesh Carlo, Prof Jayaram Thumbe introduced the chief guest. Thanushree Shetty compered the programme and Nithin Joshua delivered the vote of thanks.
