Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan held at Bendorewell

Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 22: The area of Bendorewell in the city was cleaned by the volunteers of the Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan on Sunday, April 21.

Rotarian of Seaside Rotary Club of the city Shivaram Adoor and social worker from the capital city, Shraddha jointly flagged off the drive. Swami Ekagamyananda, convenor of the mission's Abhiyan was present on the occasion.

"The cleaning drive has been a model to many NGOs and this has inspired them to follow similar cleaning drives. People are also more aware of the cleanliness now and this reflects in the change in the appearance of the city,"said Shivaram Adoor.

Bendorewell-Balmatta main road cleaned by the mission as part of the campaign.

Dirt and sand that piled on the main road was cleared by Mohan Kottari and senior volunteers. Women volunteers concentrated their efforts in cleaning the Bendorewell Circle. The teams identified three places as black spots that are littered heavily by the pedestrians on the stretch of Bendorewell and Balmatta. These areas were cleaned and flower pots were kept in such places to prevent the public from littering.

The slabs on the footpaths were repaired and relaid by some volunteers that were causing issues to pedestrians while walking. The junk from the nearby construction sites and pieces of demolished concrete pillars were also wiped off clean by the team. Banners and posters that were hung and pasted were also removed.

Awareness was created among the public by the team by distributing pamphlets that had instructions about the same to the nearby houses and shops.

The Ramakrishna Mission also encourages the use of cloth bags in place of plastic in order to save the nature. MRPL is the sponsor of these bags, which are distributed to the public. This is also a part of awareness creation among the city dwellers.

Nearly 6,000 such bags which carry specially designed themes like 'Save Earth By Saying No To Plastic', 'Green Earth', 'Çonserve Nature', 'Clean Earth' and 'Save Trees' are distributed to the public in the Jan Sampark Abhiyan that is carried out on a daily basis.

Speaking after distributing the bags, Swami Ekagamyananda said, "We should use cloth bags in place of plastic ones in order to save the nature. Others should be encourage to use nature-friendly items. Only then the next generation will get a cleaner and better society. We should follow the rule of reuse and recycle."

Very nice. Once the filth is cleared, the footpath is clearly visible except that it needs some repairs. Hope, one day, every citizen will act responsibly and help maintain the cleanliness of their neighborhood. City corporation should also help in this effort.
