Mangalore, Mar 14: A peace committee meeting was convened by the district administration on Friday night to ensure that there will be no disturbance to public peace during the Hindu Samajotsava programme to be organised here on Sunday. Prominent community leaders in the city took part in the meeting.

Participants, at the end of the two-hour meeting, unanimously agreed that the programme should go ahead with a few minor adjustments. The organisers of the samajotsava and representatives of various Hindutva groups promised that there would be nothing inflammatory about any community during the programme. In return, the leaders of Muslim and Christian communities offered full support for the event.

M.B. Puranik, Mangalore region’s head of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), said that the event had no political overtones. “This is purely a religious programme. Its objective is to create an atmosphere where Hindus can come together and deliberate on issues facing the community,” he said. Earlier, several leaders of minority communities pointed out that some of the advertising material carried inflammatory content. “We will go out of our way to support the programme. But due care should be taken to avoid hurting our sentiments,” a leader from the Muslim Central Committee said. Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao told presspersons that his department was not taking any chances. Over 3,000 police personnel would be deployed to thwart any attempt at disturbing the peace in the city. A route march would be carried out a day ahead of the programme, he said.

It is ironical that one belonging to Rama Sene and the other Congress in a distant country donot rake up communalism but live together as Indians. It is ironical that a dying Rama Sene activist is prepared to accept the blood of a Christian if it saves his life.If Muthalik fell into a well,he would definitely not turn back a Muslim who jumped to rescue him.Any healthy radically oriented person, finding himself in critically ill situation at some point of time looks for help from anybody, from any quarters, and without questions. So where should we draw a line where divisive attitude tapers off, and humanism surfaces?

Nice to see the pics of policewoman. Now the really is to protect the Hindus, which they should be, and you have women police. When batons were charged on minorities in Kulshekhar on women and children, didn't Mangalore have (enough) women police? This is a serious question really.

Christain and muslim leaders aways given their best to restore the peace everywhere.Mangalore is known for its calm, and peaceful atmosphere.small groups like, bajrangdal & Ramasena with the political backup slottered the peace at the region. What harm does christian community has done to the soceity. It has done always good in their surroundings.Christian community is taking a leading part in every social activities and its reknown to thier out put.where as certain political groups cannot bear with that.So they use Rama sene and Bajrangdal as their instrument to destroy the existing peace and harmony.I don't think educated people of Mangalore will support people those who build up the communal disturbances. As far as I know all Mangaloreans are peace lovers.

Samajothsva is a waste work. Celebration of "Santhmary" is a useful one. Help poor dalith and convert them. This is our motto.

Eric, we should be happy to read this news article because it shows all parties wanted to live together peacefully. It is because of people like you who enjoy spreading hatredness among the people with your negative comments Mangalore recently had series of disturbances. Why are you trying promote split within the Hindus by saying VHP is mainly comprises of Brahmins? What you know about VHP? Please stop spoiling Mangalore with such divisive comments. You are no way better than Rama Sena.

This Samajotsava is purely a Political Programme to Garner votes from Hindu before election. In fact the Posters and Banners contained inflammatory contents itself shows that they want to create trouble. Also they forced upon the Vehicles to fix the Flags itself was threatening and Terrorising. It was a wise decision by DC to remove all Posters and Banners. Minority community should offer support only if the HIndu Outfits show the same gesture which I doubt as the VHP comprises mainly of Brahmins who do not support HIndu low Caste or Dalits or Untouchables.
