Jeddah: Ministry of Culture to revamp Saudi's cultural sector

Jeddah, Apr 5: Eleven art and culture organizations will be launched this year as part of Saudi's cultural sector revamp by the Ministry of Culture which will be in accordance with Vision 2030 reforms.

Abdulkareem Al-Hameed, ministry spokesperson said, "To bring about maximum quality and efficiency the General Authority for Culture (GAC) will be replaced by these organizations. Each sector will independently supervise one cultural sector keeping in line the vision and guidelines of the Ministry of Culture to be implemented. The new cultural units will supervise architecture and interior design, museums, libraries, heritage, art of cooking, fashion, literature and publication, music, performance arts, food and movies and visual shows.

"Under a specific time-frame, each entity will execute the initiatives it oversees, following the main goals outlined in the document of the ministry’s vision and guidelines.

"The GAC will be replaced in stages to ensure completion of the structuring under the ministry’s plan.

"The new cultural organizations’ role will be operative," Hameed said.

To ensure their commitment to the guidelines' three main objectives namely promoting the Kingdom internationally, Promoting culture to become a lifestyle, and contributing to economic growth are adhered, the ministry will oversee the functioning.

More than 1,200 representatives of local, regional and international cultural groups witnessed the announcement of the guidelines in a ceremony on March 27 in addition, 27 cultural initiatives were also announced which included cooking and fashion, heritage, music, literature, filmmaking and theater.
