Mangaluru Feb 23: Former minister Ramanath Rai and Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath indulged in a verbal fight during a programme, in which people and leaders opposing the central government’s move to merge Vijaya Bank with other banks, had participated irrespective of party affiliations at Town Hall on Saturday February 23, organised by Vijaya Bank Ulisi Horata Samithi.

Addressing the gathering former minister Ramanath Rai said, “Vijaya Bank belongs to this region and we need to save its name. Whenever there is problem, none of state representatives have approached central government to keep its demand. There is no use of protesting and organising public meet to gain political mileage. We need to take the delegation to the ministry and discuss about it as we need to save the name of Vijaya Bank,”

“I am ready to be part of delegation and it is my responsibility to gather all MLAs and MPs from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. You need to fix the date and we are ready to come along with you and have a discussion with the ministry regarding the bank merger issue,” said MLA Vedavyas Kamath in his speech.

"Before I arrived at this programme, I saw in a TV channel Ramanath Rai criticizing the central government during his speech. It is not necessary to blame central government and this is not the platform to criticize the central government and the central ministers. This programme is about saving the name of Vijaya Bank,” Kamath added.

Irked with this statement made by MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Ramanath Rai replied," It is the responsibility of local MLAs and MPs to take us with the delegation to central ministry to save Vijaya Bank. Instead they are expecting us to take them along with the delegation. You (BJP) are in power in central government and many MLAs belong to BJP and it is your responsibility to save Vijaya Bank,”

Rai also said, "Vedavyas Kamath questioned about the bank employees not raising voice during the road issue. But the bank employees question the presence of MPs during the bank merger. You (Vedavyas Kamath) mentioned about criticizing BJP during my speech. But as you arrived late, you do not know what I spoke. I did not speak politics during my speech in this programme.”

The war of words continued for some more time between these two leaders over the same issue.

Nobody is worried about the merger of VB and BOB, the crowd testifies the seriousness of this issue. Nationalised Banks and their staffs have enjoyed golden period all these years , its important to provide better service than creating Hungama and projecting this as a big problem

The management and employees must also have a say in deciding about the merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda and not just the government and politicians. My question is when BOB is a loss making bank, why should VB should merge with it? In such case BOB should be liquidated or merged with VB thus retaining the name of Vijaya Bank.

Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA came late for the program and Ramanath Rai had already finished his speech. The arrogancy of Vedavyasa Kamath is very much visible. This is typical mind set of confrontation nature. They give damn to public feeling.

Actually sad to see so called senior commentators cry hoarse on off beaten run records of EVMs and Rafales, just like Mayawati or Raul are doing so. Speaks of their inability to understand issues and dwell deep on their failures. As readers, we are finding this very boring.

There should not have been members from BJP in Vijaya Bank ulusi horata samithi because that party is responsible for the tragedy. How bjpians can offend their own gives policy is the mute question.

    David,

Can you ask Rai, why Vittla Police gave a free haircut to him in 1977???...and why he was telling everybody he went to Tirupati after that???...

2 people can vouch for this, one is Vijaya Kumar Shetty, his then room mate and former MLA of Surathkal….second Harikrishna Batwal, his then friend...

For the sake 'Vijaya Bank' employees, the Tulu Nadu demands an open debate between BJP and Congress.
We Tulu Nadu stands with employees demand to oppose the merger which is against the interest of our own people.

I think Mr.Ramanath Rai has not used his political experience how to counter the allegation. It is time he needs to be a little more aggressive. If he poses him one question why and where was Mr. Kamath when Namo Naresh was missing in RTI activist murder all the equation will change forever.

Sir, Vedavyas Kamath is the candidate who trashed the favorite Mlure Congi Candidate to pulp to and won the recently concluded RS polls election comprehensively. Ramanatha Rai is the Cong candidate who was rear ended in his own home constituency by a huge margin. Both the losing candidates political future is a doubt . I Hope now you understand 'who is who'. Thanks. DA Rao
