About Formula Imperial-HVC:

Formula Imperial is a student formula style vehicle design and the manufacturing event was held on February 3 to 10. The event was formerly known as Hybrid Vehicle Challenge-HVC. The objective of the challenge is to design and fabricate a hybrid vehicle or an electric vehicle or Combustion Vehicle under event design restrictions so as to give the chance to students demonstrate and prove their creativity and their engineering skills in comparison to teams from other universities or colleges around Asia. Teams will use IC engine and electric motor to run their vehicle which is called hybrid formula vehicle or a vehicle that is charged from an electric source and propelled by electric drive only which is called electric formula vehicle. 6th Formula Imperial-HVC also introduced Combustion Category in which formula Vehicle is propelled by IC Engine only.

About Team:

Team Arvans is a team of 42 enthusiastic engineers of various branches from Mangalore institute of technology and engineering lead by Manjunath S and Rohan. The team was dedicated to design and fabricate a formula style student Hybrid racing car. The team was started in January 2018 and after a sleepless effort of one year we have successfully fabricated the vehicle from scratch.

The team consisted of 45 members of various departments under the guidance of Dr C R Rajashekhar, Dept of Mechanical Engineering.

Technical specifications of the car

After the virtual round, the vehicle was fabricated at MITE. The car has a KTM 390 engine and a 6KW BLDC motor. It can be driven independently by the motor and engine or the motor and engine can be used together in the hybrid mode. Our car had a few unique features such as a mode shifting mechanism and a quick shifter with a piggy back ECU.

The car has been built with the best possible parts keeping quality and safety as the priorities which are why it was the most robust car in the competition. Due to the quality of parts we used, our car was also the fastest and most maneuverable car. The total cost involved in developing the car was Rs. 8.50 lakhs.

Different tests carried out

Virtual Round:

All the teams had to completely design their vehicle and analyze it. The data obtained from the same had to be submitted to a panel of judges who would rate the quality and accuracy of the design and give an all India Virtual Rank. The teams were allowed to fabricate only if they clear the virtual round. Our team stood fourth in the virtual round at the National level.

The vehicle was thoroughly tested at MITE, the vehicle was transported to the event site which was held at Galgotias University and Budd international circuit, Greater Noida, UP.

People’s choice award:

This round is a static round which will be conducted on social media where every team has to make a video of fabrication and testing of the vehicle and ISIE will upload it to their YouTube link and the team video with maximum views wins the round .Our team had highest views of 8500 among all the teams.

Technical inspection:

First among all was the technical round where the judges from top automotive companies inspect the vehicle to make sure that is satisfies all the rules given in the rulebook .Our team was one among the two teams to clear the technical inspection in the first attempt.

Brake Test:

As the name suggests it is a safety test where the brakes of the vehicle is to be demonstrated and all the four wheels should lock and the vehicle should come to rest within 10m from the point where brakes are applied to clear the test. Our Team was the first team to clear the brake test in a single attempt.

Acceleration Test:

Acceleration test is a dynamic test which to know the power delivery of the vehicle .The vehicle is allowed to accelerate from a distance of 50m and the time taken to cover the distance is taken .Our vehicle had completed the acceleration event with an record time of 0-70.5kmph in just 6.19 seconds.

Cross pad:

Cross pad is another dynamic event which puts the steering of the vehicle into test and also the driving skills of the driver .The steering system of the vehicle is subjected to steep turns and different type of forces and the time to complete the cross pad is taken and the number of cones hit will also be considered and points are given accordingly .Our driver Rohan MV was the main reason to complete the cross pad in just 39 seconds.

Business plan presentation:

This is a static round is carried out to know the marketing skills of the team by means of presentation .Our B-plan was presented by Dhruv Koushik and Rahul Poojary and due to their presentation skills we were the second highest in the event.

Design Evaluation:

DE is a static round where the judges evaluate our vehicle design in all aspects including chassis, bodyworks, suspension, steering, Powertrain innovation and electronics. Our vehicle had an auto mode shifting technology which had impressed the judges and the body work was completely handmade which gave us full 100 points in this round.

Endurance:

Endurance is the most important dynamic round which has highest points of all the event .As the name suggests the endurance of the vehicle is tested .The vehicle is to be run continuously and should complete 14 laps each of 1.5km.The vehicle which finishes the endurance without any damage and technical issues and also the least amount of time is provided full points. Our vehicle had completed the endurance with zero issues and damage which gave us the full points in this round.

Prizes Bagged by our team:
1. People's choice award
2. Best Acceleration
3. Best cross pad
4. Best driver
5. Best endurance
6. The overall champions trophy

And overall cash prize of 1.5 Lakh Rupees.
