Will boycott India-Pak World Cup clash if govt feels same: BCCI official

New Delhi, Feb 20 (NIE): A top official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday stated that the World Cup match between India and Pakistan will not take place if the Indian government is against it.

The official, however, cautioned that if India did not play against the country in the tournament then Pakistan will get the points without even participating in the match. It was further clarified by the official that the Indian board has not approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the matter.

“The situation with regard to World Cup can only become clear after some time that is a little closer to the World Cup. ICC has nothing to do with it.

"If the government, at that point of time, feels that we should not play then we should not play. It is obvious that we won't play but result for that would be that Pakistan will get the points for match and if it is the final match then without playing, Pakistan will win the cup,” the BCCI official told ANI.

“As of now we have not approached the ICC in this regard,” the official added.

Meanwhile, ICC is scheduled to hold a meeting in Dubai from February 27 and there are chances that the matter related to India-Pakistan World Cup clash will be discussed on the sidelines.

BCCI chief executive officer Rahul Johri and secretary Amitabh Chaudhry are expected to represent the Indian board in the meeting.

ICC chief executive officer David Richardson has already clarified that they are monitoring the situation between the two cricket boards. He further confirmed that the council has not received any indication of World Cup matches not being played between India and Pakistan.

“Our thoughts are with the people that were impacted by the incident. And we are monitoring the situation with our members including the BCCI and PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board).

"Certainly there are no indications any of the matches, including the Pakistan-India match, will not be played as planned at the World Cup. But as I say we will continue to monitor the situation,” David told ESPNcricinfo.

“Sport, and cricket in particular, is perfectly placed - it has the wonderful ability to bring people together to unite communities. And hopefully cricket can be used in this fashion rather than a way of [dividing] people,” he added.

India and Pakistan are scheduled to play against each other in the World Cup on June 16 but after the deadly Pulwama terror attack, a large section of people from India wants to boycott the clash on the pitch.

Around 40 CRPF personnel were killed when a CRPF convoy, while moving from Jammu to Srinagar, was attacked by a suicide bomber in Pulwama on February 14.

Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Indian cricket team enjoys the best of luxurious and always travel in bulletproof bus coach.
But the fate of the CRPF soldiers who died in Pulwama attack is traveling in a covey of a junkyard without heaters in extreme cold condition on that day.
If BCCI concerns are genuine for the nation, the team must play with Pakistan and contribute the earnings to the family of the slain soldiers.
I would rather say sport, entertainment and trade should be kept away from politics.
Recently, the BCCI Director was caught in 'Me too' allegation. The corrupt allegation posed by former cricketer Kirti Azad is yet to prove in Delhi Cricket Board in which Union Finance Minister
These cricketers have enough money. Let them contribute at least 100 bulletproof buses for Army in Kashmir.
Boycotting from the game is equivalent to cowardice.

Most of the entities don't want to miss the opportunity of easy publicity. That's it. Like Anushka Sharma who posted a video of scolding a man for throwing a small piece of paper. I don't think she might have donated at least 1 trash bin till today.

Don't bring politics in World Cup Cricket and should be played on true sporting spirit irrespective of rivalry between the two countries. India must play the opponent team whether it is Pakistan or any other country and it's a Gentleman's game so remain as it is!!!

Boycotting an international World Cup match will be acceptance of defeat both on and off the field. I hope common sense prevails and the BCCI will not bow down to Govt, chaddi bhakt politicians and their blind followers!!!

I really don't understand why the simple cricket matches are equated to the fight between two countries.
Cricket is just a game. Play it with sportmanship or just don't play.

Not quite. Ancient Greeks invented sports and games and the Olympics to showcase them. Those Olympics lasted 1200 years - 10 times longer than current Olympics. The whole purpose was to improve the fitness of the soldiers and better prepare them for wars. Therefore Sports and games were integral part of national defence. One can not seperate Sports from National Defence and Politics.

    @Vinayak,

I think the Greeks used to fight until death in the competitions. The rulers even used to enjoy the soldiers dieing during the fight. I think you don't know more about some older cultures; how shameless and ruthless they were. I don't feel the need to resurrect that culture again.

Instead of boycotting, use this opportunity to beat Pakis to pulp and current Indian side is quite capable of doing it.
